I’m curious, that long tip at the top, what would that population be in the modern US in this region?
It stretches into parts of Wyoming at the tip and some of the least populated parts of Colorado iirc, so I’d guess maybe 200-300k? I think their largest city in the area would be Pueblo at ~100k (incorporated 1885).
For reference, the New Mexico Territory of the US had a population of 61k in 1850 / 94k in 1860, the Wyoming Territory in 1870 had 9k, and the Colorado Territory had ~34k in 1860. If Texas had all those lands put together (~6 states worth) in 1860, it’d have just over 100k people in total. At this point in time I’d guess there were 10k or less past where the Rio Grande and Arkansas river get close.
Considering that they’d have to fight past the Comanche to get there and deal with contesting claims from the US and California, I think they’d realistically give up The Northernmost strip (settling it somewhere at the Sangre De Cristo Mountains) and their claims on parts of Oklahoma and West Louisiana (not pictured) in exchange for either some extra territory for rivers/railroads or money.
They'd have to fight past the Comanche (who had an alliance with New Mexico) and they'd have to navigate the vast featureless plains.
In the OTL the Texan attempt to invade Santa Fe failed because they got lost on the way and ended up getting rescued/captured by a Mexican military regiment and paraded down to Mexico City.
Wasn’t it for cattle runs or is that later history?
It'd be quite empty I imagine, since it's all proper tall mountains, maybe ski resorts?
I think a US who still expands westward would try to buy that panhandle off for ease of travel and maybe rails

In this scenario I'm assuming New Mexico doesn't really exist anymore because they would fight to the death before getting split in half by Texas like that.
