Caloricism is the idea that heat transfer is mediated by an invisible and self-repelling fluid known as "caloric". According to the theory, materials expand when they're given more heat/caloric. Caloric fluid was believed to enter exothermic chemical reactions as a substituent inciting corresponding changes in the matter states of substances. Caloric would also be destroyed in endothermic chemical reactions.
