Anwar: Save the country first, GE16 second

IPOH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has indicated that the Dewan Rakyat is unlikely to be dissolved in the near future for the 16th general election (GE16), as the government focuses on economic and security challenges.

The Tambun MP said national stability remains the priority amid global uncertainties, including conflicts in the Middle East that are affecting the global economy.

"I will not hold an election in the next month or two, so please be patient.

"Right now, it's time to work. Enough politics — let's focus on saving our country," he said during a speech at the Madani Rakyat Programme at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah.

Also present were Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Anwar said the current situation requires both leaders and the public to prioritise strengthening the economy and safeguarding national security rather than engaging in political contestation.

He warned that ongoing international conflicts are exerting pressure on oil prices, logistics costs and supply chains, with direct consequences for Malaysians.

"This is not a political battle. This is a difficult economic reality. We need to focus on saving the country," he said.

At the same time, Anwar said the government has introduced cost-saving measures, including cancelling most official overseas visits involving ministers and their deputies.

He said the move is aimed at ensuring public funds are used prudently amid challenging economic conditions.
