WASHINGTON — Easter Sunday falls on April 5 this year, and if the holiday arrives and you're scrambling for last-minute groceries, a quick pharmacy run or just need to grab something on the go, knowing which stores will be open — and which won't — can save you a trip. 

While many retailers scale back their hours or close entirely for the holiday, a number of major retail and restaurant chains will keep their doors open.

SAN DIEGO — The FBI has warned local law enforcement and San Diego County military bases that Iran wants to launch drones at the West Coast as a retaliatory action during the conflict in the Middle East. 

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he's aware of the information and his office is relaying said information to local law enforcement agencies throughout the state. 

"Drone issues have always been top of mind, and we've assembled some work groups specifically around those concerns," he said.

Newsom said he could not provide further information. 

News 8 contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, the Navy, local police departments, local congressmembers and the FBI.

In a statement, a spokesperson from Camp Pendleton confirmed they received the FBI's warning but could not offer further information. 

"Due to operational security considerations, we cannot provide details associated with any alleged known or unknown threats at this time," the Pendleton spokesperson said.

The FBI's press office declined to comment.

The memorial service for conservative political activist and media personality Charlie Kirk will be available to watch live on streaming services Sunday.

Kirk was assassinated Sept. 10 during a campus speaking event in Utah. Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Washington, Utah, has been arrested and accused of Kirk's murder. He is charged with suspicion of aggravated murder and other felony offenses. 

Who will be attending Charlie Kirk's funeral?

President Donald Trump and high-level administration and Republican party officials, along with top political influencers are expected to be attending Charlie Kirk's memorial service. 

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Trump said that he was unsure whether first lady Melania Trump would be joining him at the funeral. 

Vice President JD Vance is also expected to attend the service.

Who is Charlie Kirk?

Kirk was most known for founding Turning Point USA, a group aimed at promoting conservative political positions on school campuses. 

Turning Point USA, and a number of its sister organizations under the Turning Point Brand, are nonprofit groups that work to elect young Republican candidates to office and encourage conservative values in high schools, colleges and in churches. 

Kirk became the face of a young Republican movement, supporting grassroots efforts to bring new blood into the party. 

The 31-year-old began his political rise in 2012 at age 18 when he was scouted by Tea Party activist Bill Montgomery while speaking at Benedictine University's Youth Government Day as a high school student. Montgomery convinced Kirk to put off college and pursue activism full time, with the pair launching Turning Point USA shortly after. 

Kirk's outspoken support of President Donald Trump's policies made him a hero to some young Republicans and drew the ire of Democrats who say he is arguing in bad faith. 

He publicly promoted conspiracies, including falsely claiming the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and boosting unsubstantiated rumors.

SAN DIEGO — An appeals court has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghan nationals.

The administration had planned to end Temporary Protected Status for Afghanistan on Monday, putting thousands at risk of deportation. However, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit blocked the administration from implementing its withdrawal of TPS for one week, until Monday, July 21. 

Temporary Protected Status is granted by the U.S. government to eligible foreign nationals from countries facing unsafe conditions, such as armed conflict or natural disasters. 

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the termination of the program for Afghanistan in May. In a statement, Noem said that the conditions in Afghanistan have improved enough to warrant the termination.

“This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent,” said Secretary Kristi Noem in a news release. “We’ve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation."

More than 11,000 Afghan refugees are currently in the U.S. under TPS, with a significant number residing in San Diego. The Trump administration's decision to end these protections comes despite concerns from refugee advocates about the safety of those who may be forced to return. 

Shawn VanDiver is a veteran and founder of Afghan Evac, a volunteer organization working with the Office of the Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts, or CARE, said these refugees helped the U.S. during wartime.

"Prosecutors and lawyers who put the Taliban away, female tactical platoon members who gathered intelligence for us. They partner with forces who trained, fought and bled alongside our Navy Seals and Green Berets," said VanDiver.

Rahmat Mokhtar, who served as a military interpreter for U.S. Marines in Afghanistan for 4 years, came to America on a special immigration visa in 2016.

"My family had to carry all of the burdens or all of the consequences of my job. I felt sorry for them and guilty," said Mokhtar, reflecting on his decision to leave Afghanistan.

Mokhtar warns that deportations could amount to a death sentence for many. He cites instances of retribution against those associated with U.S. forces.

"The former employee of the U.S. or officers that has been taken to prison, and after 10 days, their body is found dead in the streets," Mokhtar said.

Refugee advocates are urging congressional leaders to take action, emphasizing the promises made when the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan. Legal challenges are currently unfolding in court as advocates fight to protect Afghan refugees.
