Online game companies aren't doing enough to keep their games safe. I'm writing as your constituent and an ADL supporter to urge you to introduce legislation creating a national commission on hate and extremism in online video games.

The problem is real and growing. Recently ADL’s new online gaming leaderboard evaluated the in-game safety tools available to users and hate prevention policies for 10 major online multiplayer games. Of the 10 major games, 60% have only moderate or limited protections against antisemitism and hate. Gamers -- especially women, people of color, Jews and other religious minorities -- regularly face racial slurs, antisemitic stereotypes, and misogynistic attacks in popular games like Fortnite, Call of Duty and Roblox.

This isn't just a gaming industry problem. It's a national security concern. Millions of Americans, many of them young people, are being targeted based on their religion, gender, race and ethnicity in spaces meant for connection and fun.

A national commission could bring together experts, industry leaders, law enforcement and civil rights organizations to study gaming companies and related platforms that have been used to promote or enable targeted violence, including terrorism, extremism, hate speech and harassment, and develop real solutions. It would examine the scope of the problem, assess what the industry is doing now, and recommend policy steps that protect players without restricting free expression.

Federal coordination is needed. A commission gives us a framework.
