For the Summer Games, athletes representing Puerto Rico first competed at the Games of the XIV Olympiad London 1948, taking part in the sports of athletics, boxing and shooting. At the Games of the XIV Olympiad London 1948, Juan Venegas became the first athlete representing Puerto Rico to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s boxing bantamweight event. At the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Rio de Janeiro 2016, Monica Puig became the first athlete representing Puerto Rico to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the women’s tennis singles event. For the Winter Games, the first athlete to represent Puerto Rico competed at the XIV Olympic Winter Games Sarajevo 1984, taking part in discipline of luge. No athlete representing Puerto Rico has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

At Beijing 2022, Puerto Rico was represented by two athletes. Kellie Delka became the first athlete to represent the NOC in skeleton at a Winter Games, finishing 24th in the women's event. In Alpine skiing, William Flaherty finished 44th in men's slalom and 40th in men's giant slalom. William is the younger brother of Charles Flaherty, who was the NOC's only representative at PyeongChang 2018, where he finished 73rd in giant slalom.
