At Beijing 2022, Nigeria was represented by one athlete in cross-country skiing. Samuel Uduigowme Ikpefan finished 73rd in the men's sprint freestyle event, and did not finish the men's 15km classic. Ikpefan's appearance in Beijing made him the first male athlete to represent Nigeria at a Winter Games.

For the Summer Games, athletes representing Nigeria first competed at the Games of the XV Olympiad Helsinki 1952, taking part there in the sport of athletics. At the Games of the XVIII Olympiad Tokyo 1964 Nojim Maiyegun became the first athlete representing Nigeria to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s boxing light-middleweight event. At the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996 Chioma Ajunwa became the first athlete representing Nigeria to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the women’s athletics long jump event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Nigeria first competed at the XXIII Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, taking part there in the disciplines of bobsleigh and skeleton. No athlete representing Nigeria has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.
