For the Summer Games, athletes representing Luxembourg first competed at the Games of the V Olympiad Stockholm 1912, taking part in the sport or discipline of artistic gymnastics and athletics. At the Games of the VII Olympiad Antwerp 1920, Jos Alzin became the first athlete representing Luxembourg to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s weightlifting onetwo hand 3 events heavyweight event. At the Games of the XV Olympiad Helsinki 1952, Joseph Barthel became the first athlete representing Luxembourg to win an Olympic gold medal in a sports competition, competing in the men’s athletics 1,500 metres event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Luxembourg first competed at the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928, taking part in the discipline of bobsleigh. At the XVI Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992, Marc Girardelli became the first athlete representing Luxembourg to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s alpine skiing super G event.

At Beijing 2022, Luxembourg sent two athletes to compete in Alpine skiing. Gwyneth ten Raa started the women's slalom and giant slalom events, but did not finish either. Matthieu Osch, who was the NOC's only representative at PyeongChang 2018, finished 28th in the men's giant slalom in Beijing, and did not finish the slalom event. His appearance in Beijing made him the third athlete to represent Luxembourg at more than one edition of the Games.
