For the Summer Games, athletes representing Ireland first competed at the Games of the VIII Olympiad Paris 1924, taking part in the sports or discipline of athletics, boxing, football, tennis and water polo. At the Games of the IX Olympiad Amsterdam 1928, Pat O'Callaghan became the first athlete representing Ireland to win an Olympic medal of any colour in a sports competition, capturing gold in the men's athletics hammer throw event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Ireland first competed at the XVI Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992, taking part in the discipline of bobsleigh. No athlete representing Ireland has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

At Beijing 2022, Ireland sent six athletes including one to compete in luge for the first time in the NOC's history. Alpine skier Jack Gower posted Ireland's best result in Beijing with 12th place in the men's Alpine combined event, which is the NOC's second-highest finish at the Winter Games, after Clifton Wrottesley's fourth place in men's skeleton at Salt Lake City 2002. Also in Beijing, cross-country skier Thomas Maloney Westgaard ended the men's 15km classic in 14th place, while snowboarder Seamus O'Connor made history with his 15th place in men's halfpipe, becoming the first athlete to represent Ireland at three editions of the Winter Games. Ireland's first ever Olympic luge participant was Elsa Desmond, who finished the women's singles event in Beijing in 33rd place.
