For the Summer Games, athletes representing South Africa first competed at the Games of the III Olympiad St. Louis 1904, taking part there in the disciplines of athletics and tug-of-war. At the Games of the IV Olympiad London 1908 Reggie Walker became the first athlete representing South Africa to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s athletics 100 metres event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing South Africa first competed at the VIII Olympic Winter Games Squaw Valley 1960, taking part there in the discipline of figure skating. No athlete representing South Africa has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

South Africa did not take part in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. The NOC's last Winter Games appearance was at PyeongChang 2018, where one athlete, Connor Wilson, competed in two men's Alpine skiing events.
