For the Summer Games, athletes representing Bosnia and Herzegovina first competed at the Games of the XXV Olympiad Barcelona 1992, taking part in the sports or disciplines of athletics, canoe sprint, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Bosnia and Herzegovina first competed at the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, taking part in the disciplines of alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing and luge. No athletes representing Bosnia and Herzegovina has yet won an Olympic Games medal of any colour.

At Beijing 2022, Bosnia and Herzegovina sent six athletes to compete in Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and luge. Alpine skier Elvedina Muzaferija's 25th place in women's super-G remains the highest finish for the NOC in any women's Alpine skiing event, while Eric Strahinja's results in the men's 50km freestyle (52nd) and the men's sprint freestyle (59th) were the NOC's highest ever finishes in cross-country skiing at the Games. Also in 2022, Mirza Nikolajev became the first athlete to represent the NOC in luge since the 1998 Games in Nagano. He finished 34th in men's singles in Beijing.
