For the Summer Games, athletes representing Armenia first competed at the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, taking part in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, boxing, road cycling, diving, judo, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the XXVI Olympiad Atlanta 1996, Armen Nazaryan became the first athlete representing Armenia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s wrestling Greco-Roman flyweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Armenia first competed at the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, taking part in the discipline of bobsleigh. No athlete representing Armenia has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.
Prior to Beijing 2022, Armenia's highest finish at the Winter Games was 19th, which was achieved twice at the 1998 Games in Nagano, by freestyle skier Armen Rafayelyan in men's moguls and by pairs figure skaters Aleksander Chestnikh and Maria Krasiltseva. Armenia sent six athletes to the 2022 Games, where the NOC managed to improve on its best ever result, with Tina Garabedian and Simon Proulx Senecal finishing 18th in the ice dance event. Also in Beijing, women's cross-country skier Katya Galstyan became the first athlete to represent Armenia at three editions of the Winter Games.
