But aren’t they still a part of the kingdom of Denmark?

Yes. The Danes decided not to honor the election result. But it is looking more and more likely that the faroe islands will become more independent in the near future, as the majority of the faroese political parties are working towards this.

The Faroese Parliament went against it, and when a vote was called unionist parties won.

Later Denmark said: "You can be independent , but we won't pay for the transition. "

If it's independence,  it's on the Faroese to pay for their services, not Denmark.

I think secession from Denmark is honestly a pretty stupid idea. Denmark is funding some pretty impressive infrastructure such as tunnels between islands that the Faroes would never be able to afford on their own.
I say this as an Icelander, we have eight times the population of the Faroe Islands and we struggle to fund most of our infrastructure.
Edit: it has been explained to me by several people that the Faroe Islands are indeed funding the tunnels by themselves, which is seriously impressive.

Does the Faroe Islands have anything in particular to be able to sustain an independent economy? My main gripe with nations like this gaining independence is that they’ll generally pivot to being tax havens as it’s the most sensible thing for a micro-state. I suppose one more tax haven won’t really change much.

As I know they are free to do anything within their borders but military and political desicion under Danish crown. Not Denmark but crown

1946 Faroese independence referendum - Results

  • Independence: 5,660 - 50.72%

  • Union with Denmark: 5,499 - 49.28%

  • Valid votes: 11,159 (95.87%)

  • Invalid/blank votes: 481 (4.13%)

  • Total votes: 11,640

  • Registered voters / Turnout: 17,216 / 67.61%

254

Not even 70 percent?? That seems extremely low for an independence referendum.

154

That's about 30% of the population in 1946. Even today its barely over 50,000 residents total.

43

Not extremely low, remember this was 1946. Pretty average number for that time.

Since islands don’t vote and people do, it would be more helpful to show the vote by population share etc

197

I commented it.

55

Yes, but by island. Otherwise it looks like 100% of say Sandoy voted for secession

love maps like this because they remind you islands can be politically close and still have completely different vibes about who they want to belong to. geography says one thing local identity says not so fast.

72

To be honest, we can't really tell much from this map. The overall referendum was 50.72 to 49.28. For all we know, one island could have voted 51/49 and another 49/51.

Need a graduated colour map for more context.

174

It actually is a pretty stark disparity from one island to another as per wikipedia. It's a shame the map doesn't really show that.

17

You could put the 5000 dots on the map!

Not necessarily. Plenty of boroughs/provinces that are next to each other often have different election results, without being dissimilar culturally.

It's the nature of referendums that even if one area votes 51/49, on a map such as this is will only show the one colour.

There's no true independence for a small island nation in our current world. Even if legally you're not part of another country, you'll always be dependent on who pays, because I'm sure there aren't deep oil reserves under the Faroe islands and I'm sure their citizens aren't willing to live like hunter gatherers.

Don't get me wrong, I'm European as well, but people pushing for the establishment of a "country" with a population of 50,000 stretched on a couple of islands in 2026, in a world of 8.5+ billion people, is as stupid as it gets. This isn't 3000 BC guys.

5

I wonder how popular a third option of uniting with Iceland rather than these two alternatives Denmark and independence would have been.

8

Tbh as a dane i would not mind you and geeenland to be independent, often we just heard about how bad we treated you in the past, and its getting a little old.

4

These maps piss me off because land doesn’t vote, people do. But we have no idea how many people voted.

7

I think they just figured out what their new flag should look like :)

Don’t show Americans there’s another offshore Danish territory

3

Being part of Denmark looking pretty good these days - an American

3

As an European I'm just so fucking tired of these mini-states popping up on the already fragmented continent, it's unreal. Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Catalonia...any other group of several THOUSAND people (slightly more in Cataloania) pushing for a sovereign state in a world of 8.5 BILLION people??

What sort of insanity has struck 50% of the faroese population? Do they seriously believe 55k people can stand alone in the world?

11

There are some Polynesian island states with similar numbers. But yeah it seems to me a strange position, it would only feasibly mean travel and necessary trade is more expensive.

This is from the 1946 vote, I think. Not today.

This map triggered my openfront.io PTSD, thanks

This island.. how many people are we talking about?

2

It's fascinating how close the vote was, basically a coin toss. The map is cool for geography, but you're right that a population breakdown would tell a much clearer story about where the actual support was concentrated. It really highlights how divided the sentiment must have been at the time. No wonder the status question has been a long-running conversation.
