For the Summer Games, athletes representing Liechtenstein first competed at the Games of the XI Olympiad Berlin 1936, taking part in the sports or disciplines of athletics, road cycling and shooting. No athlete representing Liechtenstein has yet won an Olympic Summer Games medal of any colour. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Liechtenstein first competed at the IV Olympic Winter Games Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936, taking part in the sport or discipline of alpine skiing and bobsleigh. At the XII Olympic Winter Games Innsbruck 1976, Hanni Wenzel became the first athlete representing Liechtenstein to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the women’s alpine skiing slalom event. At the XIII Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980, Hanni Wenzel became the first athlete representing Liechtenstein to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s alpine skiing giant slalom event.
Liechtenstein claimed three more bronze medals in Alpine skiing across the 1984 and 1988 Games. The NOC would have to wait another 30 years to win its next medal, with Tina Weirather winning bronze in the women's super-G at PyeongChang 2018. Liechtenstein sent one male and one female to the Beijing 2022 Games. Competing at her first Winter Games, cross-country skier Nina Riedener posted a best finish of 57th in the women's 15km skiathlon, while Alpine skier Marco Pfiffner, who also competed at PyeongChang 2018, took part in three events with a highest finish of 11th in the men's Alpine combined.
