For the Summer Games, athletes representing Israel first competed at the Games of the XV Olympiad Helsinki 1952, taking part in the sports or disciplines of athletics, basketball, diving, shooting and swimming. At the Games of the XXV Olympiad Barcelona 1992, Yael Arad became the first athlete representing Israel to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the women’s judo half-middleweight event. At the Games of the Olympiad XXVIII Athens 2004, Gal Fridman became the first athlete representing Israel to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s sailing mistral windsurfer event. For the Winter Games, one athlete representing Israel first competed at the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, taking part in the discipline of figure skating. No athlete representing Israel has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.

At Beijing 2022, Israel sent six athletes to compete in Alpine skiing, figure skating and short track speed skating. The NOC's best result in Beijing was Barnabas Szollos' sixth place in the men's Alpine combined event. This equalled Israel's previous highest finish at the Games, achieved in figure skating ice dance by Galit Chait and Sergey Sakhnovsky at Salt Lake City 2002. Chait and Sakhnovsky competed at three Winter Games each for Israel, a record they shared until Beijing 2022 when they were joined by short track speed skater Vladislav Bykanov and figure skaters Alexei Bychenko and Evgeni Krasnopolski who each took part in their third Games. Bykanov competed in three events in Beijing with a best finish of 12th in the men's 500m event. Krasnopolski and Hailey Kops finished 14th in pair skating, while Bychenko finished the men's single skating in 26th place.
