China to require physical controls for vehicle functions, reducing reliance on central control screen

The Chinese MIIT intends to require physical control mechanisms for functions such as turning turn signals on/off, raising/lowering windows, and activating advanced driving assistance system. This new requirement is expected to be mandatory for only newly manufactured vehicles starting July 1, 2027.

In recent years, a theme among Chinese new energy vehicles is minimalistic cockpit design, with one of its characteristics being minimal presence of physical control buttons. Instead, a large central control screen houses most of the vehicle functions, and sometimes paired with co-pilot entertainment screen. This ubiquitous design was described by Geely’s VP as the “Chinese automotive industry is plagued by a trend of blindly following trends.”

As a revision to the existing national standard GB4094—2016 “Marking of Automotive Control Components, Indicators, and Signaling Devices”, the update adds new types and technical requirements for physical control components, ensuring that key control components are accessible, usable, and largely blind-operable during driving, without overly relying on visual input and reduce distractions caused by display screens.

This revision started in 2023, involving major automotive manufacturers and testing institutions, including China Automotive Technology and Research Center, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen, BYD, and Great Wall Motor. A draft for public comment has been completed and will be released soon, which specifically includes the following functions:

  • Lighting: Turn signals, hazard warning lights (double flashers), horn
  • Gear shifting: P/R/N/D (screen-only shifting is prohibited)
  • Driver assistance: Activation switch for the advanced driver assistance system
  • Safety/emergency: Windshield wipers, defroster/defogger, power windows, Child/Accident Emergency Call System (AECS), and electric vehicle power off switch

Other detailed requirements for physical controls were also specified such as dimensions (effective operating area ≥ 10 mm x 10 mm), usability (fixed position, blind operation, haptic/auditory feedback), and reliability (basic functions remain available when the vehicle system crashes/power is lost).

BYD launched the Song Ultra EV on March 26, with four variants priced between 151,900 and 179,900 yuan (21,000–24,800 USD). The model is available with CLTC ranges of 620 km and 710 km.

This follows earlier coverage by CarNewsChina, which reported that the Song Ultra EV opened presales on March 5, starting from 155,000 yuan (22,470 USD), with a 270 kW motor and up to 710 km range.

Exterior

The Song Ultra EV adopts a minimalist front design with a black grille and integrated headlight structure. A full-width daytime running light connects across the front.

The side profile features a floating roof created by a blackened D-pillar and a three-section waistline. The vehicle is equipped with 19-inch low-drag wheels. At the rear, a full-width light bar incorporates a Chinese-knot design, paired with an integrated roof spoiler. Six exterior colours are offered.

Interior and cabin

The cabin includes a 15.6-inch rotating central display, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a 26-inch head-up display, running BYD’s UI 7.0 system.

Interior materials include soft-touch surfaces in high-contact areas, a column-mounted electronic shifter, and 3D ambient lighting. The vehicle supports four-zone voice interaction.

A separate CarNewsChina report based on MIIT filings identified the Song Ultra EV as the Dynasty series’ first B-segment electric SUV, with a single rear motor layout and up to 710 km range.

Seating and storage

The front seats feature ventilation, heating, and 10-point massage. The driver’s seat provides 8-way electric adjustment, while the passenger seat includes additional adjustment functions and a leg rest.

The cabin supports a flat “bed mode” in which the front and rear seats fold into a continuous surface measuring approximately 1.8 meters. Rear seats fold in a 40/60 configuration, and rear legroom is listed at 986 mm.

Storage includes a 150 L front trunk and a 730 L rear trunk, expandable to 1659 L. A built-in cooling and heating box operates over the range of −6°C to 50°C.

Powertrain and charging

The Song Ultra EV uses a rear-wheel-drive single-motor setup with outputs of 240 kW and 270 kW, delivering 305 Nm of torque and a top speed of 210 km/h.

All variants are equipped with BYD’s Short Blade Battery 2.0, also referred to as the second-generation Blade battery. The battery capacities are 68.4 kWh and 82.7 kWh, corresponding to CLTC ranges of 620 km and 710 km, respectively.

Charging from 10% to 70% takes 5 minutes, while charging from 10% to 97% takes 9 minutes. At −30°C, the charging time increases by approximately 3 minutes.

Chassis and driver assistance

All variants come standard with the DiSus-C intelligent damping system and a suspension setup featuring a front McPherson and a rear five-link configuration.

The vehicle includes seven airbags, including a front centre airbag, and a tyre blowout stability system.

An optional DiPilot 300 system adds lidar and 27 sensors, supporting city navigation assist, highway navigation assist, and automated parking functions. Pre-sale orders exceeded 21,586 units.

BYD’s 2026 Denza D9 will begin pre‑sales on March 29, 2026, according to official information reported by Autohome. The updated MPV continues to offer both plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) and battery‑electric (BEV) variants with hardware changes focused on energy storage and charging performance.

Exterior Design and Dimensions

Exterior revisions focus on the front end. The new D9 carries a new front grille design with enhanced three‑dimensional layering relative to the outgoing model, while retaining its overall MPV form. Reported dimensions are 5250 mm in length, 1960 mm in width, and 1900 mm in height, with a 3110 mm wheelbase. These measurements align with the previous generation and confirm that there are no major dimensional changes in the update.

Powertrain Configurations and Range

For the PHEV version, the D9 uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with dual electric motors. The powertrain comprises a 115 kW combustion engine, a 200 kW front electric motor, and a 45 kW rear electric motor. CLTC‑rated pure‑electric range exceeds 400 km for the PHEV model, and reported fuel consumption is 6.35 L/100 km.

The BEV variants include a 340 kW front motor and, in all‑wheel‑drive form, an additional 70 kW rear motor, with pure‑electric range options of 750 km and 800 km according to MIIT filing.

Battery and Fast Charging

All Denza D9 variants are equipped with BYD’s Short Blade 2.0 battery, designed for high‑power applications and fast charging. Official figures cite charging from 10 % to 70 % in about 5 minutes and from 10 % to 97 % in about 9 minutes under typical conditions. Cold-weather tests show that at –20 °C, charging from 20 % to 97 % takes approximately 12 minutes, and at –30 °C, the time increases by about three minutes. Both plug-in hybrid and pure electric versions benefit from the battery, with the PHEV offering over 400 km of pure electric range and the EV model achieving up to 800 km.

Electronics and Assistance Systems

The updated model is confirmed to adopt the latest generation of BYD’s “God’s Eye” 5.0 advanced driving assistance system, as reported.

Additional technical upgrades on the BEV side have also been exposed. According to CarNewsChina, an upcoming update to the Denza D9 EV reveals a more powerful 340 kW (456 hp) front electric motor, up from earlier versions, with a combined system output of 410 kW (550 hp) on all-wheel-drive models. OEM battery specifications and range for this revised EV are pending official release.

Market context

As CarNewsChina reported, the D9 recorded 300,000 cumulative global deliveries by late 2025, reaching that volume faster than any previous new energy MPV and accounting for approximately 60 per cent of China’s high‑end NEV MPV market at the time. The model was also reported as slated for introduction in Europe under the Denza brand.

In Australia, the 2026 Denza D9 is on sale as an all‑electric people mover with pricing from 85,990 USD (base front‑wheel‑drive) to 95,990 USD (all‑wheel‑drive) before on‑road costs, and claimed WLTP‑cycle range figures near 520 km.

In the Philippines, Denza officially entered the market in early 2026 with the D9 priced at PHP 4,298,000 (77,400 USD) at launch before introductory discounts, serving as the brand’s first offering in the country’s premium people mover segment
