Topics:

Queen Elizabeth just turned 82 with a most impressive and expensive celebration through out UK.

Why do the Brits still have the Monarchy?
We here in USA do not have the Monarchy.
The French do not either.
Nor the German.
Nor the Russians.
Why the HEK are the Brits still having the Monarchy and its 10s of Billions of Dollars in expenses?

Maybe because the Monarchy is the oldest Monarchy in the world going back thousands of years? If so, then it fits my theory of never fix that which is not broken.

GOOD QUESTION!
TRADITION, is part of most British people.
TOURISM, much money is earned by tourists who would not come here without a Monarchy to look at.
A LOT, of European countries still have a monarchy, maybe not so famous as Queen Elizabeth, but still Royalty.
WHY NOT, Typically British. "Querky".

I see both sides. I am 63 years old. Lived in a Republic for 20 years. Wife is African. I am open minded.
Thanks for your interest in my little country!!
Best Regards,
Adrian Jarvis.

Come on ol Chap!
More TOURIST visit France and France has NO King or Monarchy.
In fact France the country without Monarchy is the most TOURIST visited country in the World. So TOURIST will visit a country based on its sites and heritage of which UK has just as France plenty to offer.

Tradition, 'pomp' and ceremony, I think. It's a harmless enough fascination for them and, as the great British public are struggling to make ends meet, they can look for escapism in the form of the most expensive family in their 'kingdom'. Just hope, in future, they will stay out of Ireland. We have more than enough of our own leeches to worry about.

Yes, that is certainly the best reason why Brits still have the Monarchs, that is "Tradition, 'pomp' and ceremony".

And top of the morning to you in Dublin :)

Irishandproud.
Glad to see a person proud of his nationality
The leeches feeding on Ireland are the same ones feeding on Britain.
The E.U.
Or is that another debate ??

And who are those "leeches"?

@ 'Faxonly' - if the British like their 'TP+C' enough to continue paying for it in the manner they are, then they have a nerve to call us Irish 'thick' ! And top o' the DAY to you - we Dubs always have a 'top' day here in Dublin!
@'khehla' - Irish and proud, as the name suggests! And I don't agree with how we have changed our 'Masters' (in the 26 County State, anyway) from Westminster to Brussels. Someday, hopefully, we'll be 'bold' enough to speak for ourselves.

The British have always chosen the quirks of our history against foreign rationalism. The Romans brought us straight roads and decimalisation. As soon as they left, we reverted to impossibly complicated Imperial measures and winding country lanes.

In trying to explain the unlikely success of the monarchy, we shouldn't expect the answer to be based on reason ”

The Normans commissioned the Domesday Book to try and impose order on bureaucratic chaos but had to compromise at every turn. That is how we ended up with something called Worcestershire - a place that foreigners find impossible to pronounce, never mind spell.

The British don't like straight lines. When we look at those maps of the United States with ruler-straight state boundaries, we feel pity. Walter Bagehot understood that our identity is found in the twists and turns of a rural B-road, not in the pragmatism of a highway.
