For the Summer Games, athletes representing Estonia first competed at the Games of the VII Olympiad Antwerp 1920, taking part in the sports of athletics, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the VII Olympiad Antwerp 1920, Jüri Lossman became the first athlete representing Estonia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s athletics marathon event. At the same edition of the Games, Alfred Neuland, became the first athlete representing Estonia to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s weightlifting lightweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Estonia first competed at the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928, taking part in the discipline of speed skating. At the XIX Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002, Andrus Veerpalu became the first athlete representing Estonia to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s cross-country skiing 15 kilometres event.

At Beijing 2022, Estonia won its first Olympic Winter Games medal since Vancouver 2010 when 19-year-old freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru claimed bronze in the women's slopestyle event several days shy of her 20th birthday. Sildaru nearly took bronze in the women's halfpipe too, finishing fourth in that event. It was the first time the NOC had competed in freestyle skiing, and the achievement made Sildaru the youngest Estonian athlete to win a Winter Games medal. However, Sildaru was not Estonia's youngest athlete to compete in Beijing - that honour went to figure skater Eva-Lotta Kiibus who turned 19 a month before she finished 21st in the women's single event. Other notable results in Beijing include speed skater Marten Liiv's seventh-place finish in the men's 1000m event, and Kristjan Ilves' ninth place in the Nordic combined men's Gundersen large hill / 10km event.
