Ironically, hard light is bad for recording sexy time.

It will highlight every pore, every vein, every wrinkle on your nutsack.

One day I will end this ring light fad. It is my ultimate side quest.

It seems my lighting advice has given people a mistaken impression…

image
image
image
image
image
image
image

These outtakes where the flash didn’t go off are also AI generated.

image

I like this spooky dutch angle one.

image

I was just starting to learn flash and I didn’t have all the equipment I needed. Since corgis are quite short, I had to put the lighting on the ground. The off camera flash was on a tipped over lightstand with a shoot-through umbrella to diffuse the light.

But I had no wireless triggers. And the only other way to trigger a flash, is with another flash. So I used the on-camera pop up flash to trigger the main flash.

But I had two issues.

First, I did not want that dinky on camera flash affecting my picture.

Second, triggering a flash with a flash is best done indoors. The flash will bounce all around the room and eventually hit the sensor so the main flash triggers. When you are outdoors, there is no bouncing.

SO… I took a little handheld makeup mirror and angled it toward my main flash. This blocked the dinky pop up flash and sent the beam of light towards the main flash to trigger it.

I was lying on the wet morning grass, holding a camera in one hand, a mirror in the other, trying to aim the mirror exactly toward the main flash, making crazy noises to get Otis’s attention, and trying to get the focus point on his face so I didn’t get a blurry photo. Also, Otis was much more interested in sniffing things than posing for a photo.

Here is an overhead view that might help explain.

image

I await all of your comments saying my amazing drawring is clearly AI generated.

Only 30% of the time did the flash actually go off. Aiming the mirror was tricky and I was doing like 8 things at once. I wasn’t even sure I got the photo I wanted. But when I came back to the computer there was one that stood out and it is one of my favorites I’ve ever taken.

It was the best combination of monumental effort, great discomfort, perfect foggy sunrise light, and just pure luck.

Unfortunately, people like me who use advanced sculpting light techniques are getting accused of using AI more and more. Not really sure what to do about it—other than show the 30 awful photos it took to get the good one.

My 80s sunglasses photo and spoon photo get called out the most.

image
image

But it’s just good old fashioned gradient lighting which has been used in product photography since the days of film.

image

So, no need to be suspicious.

image

@ironic-dysgraphia

Most of my photos with artificial light added would be considered “unmotivated lighting.” I think that is the term you were looking for.

The short explanation is that motivated lighting always has a logical source. Like the sun or a window or a lamp off to the side.

That doesn’t mean there are no lighting shenanigans used.

image
image

The overhead office-style fluorescent lights depicted in this scene were actually powerful diffused light bars that were much closer to the actors. They replaced the ceiling in post with more traiditioinal looking lights. So the lighting was still very crafted—but it has a logic and realism that doesn’t set off alarm bells in your brain saying, “Where is the light coming from?”

Unmotivated lighting is the opposite. It’s crafted, artificial light that doesn’t need to make sense. It just has to achieve the aesthetic goal of the artist.

All studio lighting is unmotivated. I just re-edited this old photo of my dad.

image

There is no room in the world where he could have sat down and had perfectly sculpted light hitting his face. I intentionally directed the light to accentuate his features and capture the best, most idealized version of what he looked like.

Coincidentally I just wrote a post about motivated lighting in films.

Weirdly, I expressed a preference for motivated lighting in movies with a realism-based aesthetic and a lot of people disagreed. They said that the lighting comes from the same place as the music and that you just have to suspend your disbelief.

(Personally I think that is a bad analogy because music is *very* motivated by the emotional vibe. I would say unmotivated lighting in movies comes from the same place as women’s apocalypse makeup.)

But I *love* unmotivated lighting in still photography. I love crafting an image and creating it in a fantasy realm where perfect, beautiful, sculpting light can come from anywhere. I want the most idyllic lighting possible.

It’s the only way I could make fingernail clippers look beautiful.

image

And now people are saying unmotivated lighting looks like AI or CGI and isn’t authentic. Even though this aesthetic was created before computers were invented and the tools of post-capture manipulation were done in a darkroom.

I’m fairly certain this is because AI does not have a great understanding of motivated lighting. It never thinks about where the light is coming from so it almost always creates images where the lighting comes from a fantasy realm. And now people are heavily associating unmotivated lighting with AI, even if it is a subconscious observation.

I think at this point in time, people are yearning for authenticity. We know so much of our imagery is heavily manipulated for nefarious purposes. Beauty advertising with retouched skin like porcelain dolls and liquified torsos that don’t leave space for vital organs. Every fast food ad shows the perfect juicy hamburger because they paid a food stylist $500/hour to perfectly cook and arrange things.

But fast food workers are not food stylists and your burger isn’t going to have perfect lettuce and a non-smooshed bun.

(Before you reply with urban legends about food styling, they don’t use fake materials. They are required to use the actual ingredients. Those myths came from movie prop masters who needed to maintain the look of food during hours of shooting.)

I think AI just turned our uncomfortable relationship with unrealistic imagery up to 11.

It’s a little depressing for me because I love to use light as my artistic medium. I say I am a photographer, but my passion is more focused on lighting.

And I often incorporate my other passion, which is image manipulation. I sometimes add another layer of unreality to my images by artistically editing them.

image
image

This is days of work.

I worked very hard for the in-camera image. Dragging a heavy chair and lighting equipment into a field on a hot summer day was not easy for me.

But I also worked very hard on the edit. The RAW file is overexposed, but once I corrected that, the lighting on him and the grass is actually what I captured. I hid a flash in the lampshade and lit him with my big 7 foot umbrella off to the right.

I could have shot this at night, but my area has so much light pollution, I would never have achieved the sky I wanted in my head. So I took the photo knowing I’d replace the sky later.

I like crafting images. I like picturing something in my head and then trying to manifest it in a photo.

I get why people are starting to prefer more natural looking images. I understand why they are currently preferring everything to be captured as it was in the moment. I know why they disparage the amazing work of CG artists and demand that every movie use only practical effects.

When everything is fake, a small dose of reality feels special.

But I see my photography more like a drawing or a painting. Light is my paintbrush and I am just trying to manifest my imagination into an image. I don’t claim I don’t use artificial light. I never say anything is “straight out of camera.” I am very open about my use of Photoshop. If I were able to leave my house and go to more beautiful places, perhaps I would take a more motivated approach.

I mean, I love when the world is just beautiful all on its own and all I have to do is competently pick settings on my camera.

image

But I enjoy my artistic process and while some of my images may not be realistic, I think my artistry is always authentic.

I don’t need every person to like every one of my photos. But when I work hard on a photo and there is clear talent and skill involved, I’m hoping people will still acknowledge that. I hope they will respect the effort and artistry involved.

I didn’t enjoy the show Breaking Bad. I disliked all of the characters and the story just depressed me more and more as I watched it. But I still think it is an amazing show created by talented artists. I can acknowledge the monumental artistic achievement even if it wasn’t my cup of tea.

That’s all I’m asking.

Today a random clip of a F1nn5ter Q&A stream found its way into my feed.

Someone asked F1nn why it was that on her larger branded social media accounts she still listed herself as a femboy in some places while in more intracommunity spaces she more readily and comfortably identified as transfem.

Now, depending on who you ask that kind of question to you’ll probably get a meandering answer on the complexities of how one defines their own identity. But instead F1nn gave a very quick and simple answer.

She gets less death threats or other general threats of violence from people when she calls herself a femboy vs calling herself transfem. It wasn’t any deeper than that, and some people in her audience understood that, while others were confused that femboys were more palatable to cis people than transfems.

I don’t know how long I’ve been here. Time seems to pass differently. But the place is cozy and private so I have no complaints. And whenever I’m hungry, I go outside with my bowl and walk down the hill to the shore. Sometimes the lake is made of soup. Sometimes it’s huge pasta noodles the size of barges. Sometimes it’s breakfast cereal. Sometimes it’s dumplings the size of great whales. I dip my little bowl and take a portion and carry it back up to the house.

Today I found a new bowl! In its center is a little hill with a little house. I will carry it down to the shore and fill it up, and whomever lives in that little house can have a tiny portion of my meal. I hope they have a nice bowl to put it in..

I really like going back to older source material for inspiration. Not because newer ideas are bad or whatever, but because a lot of the places we get our tropes from have things that we’ve forgotten about for so long that they almost become new again.

Like dwarves. If you read the eddas they’re not like Tolkien dwarves. They’re more like idk spirits or something. Like they’re just a character type. Maybe mortal, maybe not. They’re good at crafts.

What instead of being a short guy, a dwarf was like a mountain spirit, you know?

Or werewolves. What if instead of turning into a wolf man you projected your dream self out of your body and that turned into a wolf? That’s what a lot of people thought that werewolves were for a long time.

Isn’t that like, so old that it’s new again? Isn’t that exciting?

Like maybe a vampire is basically a zombie, you know? Or a shapeshifter has to physically change their skin like a bodysuit. Or the witch in the woods is just as likely to help you as she is to eat you. Maybe immortality is gained by burning off your mortality. The skies can be reached by a mountain growing up to meet them. The gods can get drunk and make stupid decisions. Giants can be descended from angels.

There’s just like thousands of years of human creativity in storytelling to tap into. We’ve left so much of it behind fr other things and that’s not bad but some of these things we’ve left behind so long that they’re new again. We can dust them off and be like wow I’ve never seen that before. I want to use it again.

I have to say this about being a Zionist: antisemites use the word “Zionist” to mean any version of “violent, pro-genocidal monster that wants every single Palestinian to be ruthelessly murdered who agrees with every terrible thing said or done by the Israeli government,” but they deliberately include “Jewish person that won’t deny their heritage, that doesn’t want innocent Jewish people to die, or won’t be tokenised to excuse the hatred and murder of Jewish people” right inside their first definition. Existing as a Jewish person that wants peace is the same as being a genocidal maniac to them. By design.

There is no point in pretending that you’re not a Zionist or trying to distance yourself from the word because they stole it and redefined it to suit their antisemitic agenda. You’re still an evil Zionist as far as their definition is concerned if you hate the Israeli government and repeat antisemitic lies and excuse their “anti-Zionism,” but then dare to say that objectively, reusing the Nazi octopus imagery for Israel in a cartoon is an antisemitic dogwhistle that they might want to avoid.

They don’t care. They hate you. Stop emptying your pockets to beg for their approval and think that they might spare you, because they won’t. They’ll use you to tokenise you and as soon as you stop being useful or start feeling uncomfortable with how vile their antisemitism is, then you’ll be rebranded into a Zionist whether you like it or not.

It doesn’t matter whether you attend interfaith events, or take part in charity drives for Palestinians, or listen to Palestinian speakers, or even openly tell them that you genuinely do want to have peace and you hate that there is pain and war, or that you repeat over and over that Netanyahu is an evil piece of shit, because they don’t want to hear it. I’ve tried personally to explain the same thing about myself numerous times, to explain the nuance and the complexity and how terrible it all is, and it doesn’t matter at all to them. I don’t want Israel destroyed, I won’t deny my connection to Israel, I don’t want any people in Israel to die, and that is enough to make me - and the vast majority of Jewish people - evil Zionists that deserve to die. And then they get angry when we say that their hands are stained with the blood of antisemitic terrorism.

You have to understand that when they see you, they see a Jewish person and they hate you for it. All that they’re doing is waiting to find the right excuse and the right language to rebrand you as their monstrous “Zionist” instead, because those Jews, those Jews deserve everything they get.

And “those Jews” are always all of us, whatever they try to say and pretend otherwise, and whether you’re ready to accept that or not.

They want us dead. They call ordinary Jewish people “Zionists” like it’s a slur, and when ordinary Jewish people die and we point out that their rhetoric is part of the reason why, they point to the smallest, self-hating tokens and then accuse us of “politicising” what they have done to absolve themselves of their hatred - and spin it immediately to blame it on us instead.

See it for how it is, mourn and move on.

In my pinned post, I declare myself a Zionist and lay out exactly what that means. I explicitly say “I dream of the day when Jews and Arabs and everyone else will live together peacefully and happily in Israel and in the countries that sit beside it,” and “I dream, too, of the day that the Palestinian people will live in peace, without fear of bombs or vigilante violence or totalitarian governments, secure in their borders and able to build the homeland they want.”

This has not stopped people from commenting, on that post, that I am an evil Nazi.

Just ignore the antisemites* and move on with your life

*ignore the antisemites who are harassing and maliciously misinterpreting you. Take appropriate steps against the antisemites who are engaging in violence. Be mindful of the overlap between these groups.

But what I HAAAATE is when someone will have an issue with me and instead of talking to me they talk to someone else (usually someone who could be considered “ a superior” to both of us) to intercede with me. That’s cowardly and it’s bullshit and fuck that shit.

And because I am nothing if not a hypocrite, what do I do when people pull that shit? Silently seethe about it and avoid them as much as possible. There are….other reasons why I do that, but still

After all, Ahmed al Ahmed is a hero, and probably helped save many lives.

However, it was pretty shocking to take a look at the various gofundmes that have been set up and see the striking difference between the money that has been raised.

they’re about as legit as the “please save my fambly in gaza uwu” fundraisers

They’ve actually been vetted by GFM. So no, they’re far more legit than the scam asks.

Guys, I’m starting to feel like what’s actually suspicious about the many obvious scam asks on tumblr dot com is maybe getting lost in translation here

These are the countries where gofundme actually operates:

image

You will note that Australia is on that list. You will also note that neither Israel nor Palestine is.

Additionally, please note that none of these fundraisers is spinning up hundreds of identical blogs and sending thousands of copy/pasted spam asks to tumblr users who have never interacted with them before! Please note that these gofundmes are not applying weird pressure to potential donors – they’re not calling them “heartless” for scrolling passed; they’re not claiming that anyone who fails to share their fundraiser is “pro-genocide”; they’re not using inflammatory photos of dead children that a reverse image search will show were stolen from other fundraisers or even news coverage of other conflicts.

While it’s still true that donating to charitable organizations is generally better and more effective than giving via individual fundraisers, there is no reason to think that these particular fundraisers are not legit.

That said, if you’d rather just steer clear of gofundmes all together, I do understand that. Here are some organizations that support the Sidney Jewish community that you can donate to instead if that’s a concern that you have:

things that made me stop wanting to die that require no effort whatsoever

  • change the color used to highlight text on your laptop
  • move the pictures on your wall
  • stack whatever clutter is in your room into piles even if you don’t have time to clean it all
  • slightly vary your commute, even just by one street
  • change where you sit and scroll aimlessly on your phone even if it’s only to the chair in your room instead of your bed
  • drink water or juice out of a wine glass in the morning because nothing is real
  • shower with the lights off, without music
  • buy $3 flowers at trader joe’s—they look bad next to the more expensive ones but they look so good in your room
  • start typing things you don’t post into your notes. your thoughts can be worth documenting even if you don’t deem them worth sharing
  • wake up super early just once. you don’t have to make it a habit it’s just extra satisfying to go to bed that night
  • listen to the entirety of your favorite album from 2015

Almost all of these are about variety. Humans need stimulation! We need enrichment! We literally cannot do the same thing every day!

The other day I was feeling miserable, so I hopped on a bus and rode it all the way back to where I’d started, and my brain, which had finally had some proper stimulation via new environments, was suddenly ready to go again!

There’s a book that we had in our house growing up that I was obsessed with as a kid. It was just called “PAKISTAN: PAINTINGS BY LIN YONG AND SU HUA” and it was an art book of 100+ paintings/sketches by two Chinese artists who travelled thru Pakistan in 1978 and 1981, a sort of travelogue of their trip, and to little-kid me, it was some of the most beautiful things I’d ever seen. I have no idea why we had that book, but I would stare at it for hours, and it made me wish I could draw/paint/do whatever it was that these artists had managed to do.

Anyway, we’ve moved house a bunch of times and I lost track of the book and haven’t seen it for probably two decades now. But I think about it now and again, and had struggled to find it over the years, but I finally, finally got my hands on a copy of my own and i want to cry haha

I was afraid that maybe the art isn’t as good as I remembered, being just a kid and all, but I cracked it open and nope, it hits me just the way it used to. Maybe even more now. It’s so fucking pretty. Have some random pages:

you need to get it out of your mind that psychosomatic illness is just “making up symptoms” when it’s actually much more like your body is being actively poisoned by chemicals released from your brain

if you’re so stressed that you’re puking your guts up every morning, are unable to eat or keep anything down, you can’t look at light without feeling infinitely worse and feel exhausted and in pain all the time (or whatever your particular stress induced symptom set is) you’re not just feeling like that because you’ve willed it into being. your body is begging for relief from the constant barrage of stress hormones and it requires the fundamental source of stress to go away, not just distracting yourself from the symptoms

just because the root is psychological doesn’t mean the result isn’t an entirely physical process.

This and also “your body is desperately trying to alert you to the fact that stress is killing you”

Doctor, looking at my neck x-ray: “The muscles of your neck are in such spasm right now that your spine has lost its curve. No wonder you’re in such pain. What the heck did you do to yourself?”

Me: “I work on a computer all day.”

Doctor: “Ah. That will do it. Right, so here’s a script for anti-inflammatories and a muscle relaxer. Also try hot and cold on it, 15 minutes each, and then gentle movements between each round. You’ll feel better in about a week.”

Me: “In a week I’m still going to need to work on the computer.”

Doctor: “And here’s also a script for 6 months of Physical Therapy.”

Me: “In 6 months I’m still going to need to work at a computer.”

Doctor: “And take breaks and do stretches between meetings?”

Me: “They book me in back to back meetings where I work. I eat lunch at my computer. I have to excuse myself to go pee.”

Doctor: “…”

Me: “…”

Doctor: “Um… it sounds like this job is actually, literally, killing you? Can you possibly work someplace else?” *

———

*note: It wasn’t said as flippant advice, and the doctor was 100%. right. After I got a different job — which took a WHILE — it was in a different corporate culture, one that didn’t believe in filling the day with meetings. I was able to do the stretches I was supposed to do, and also walk at lunch, and my neck is much better now. Not everyone has this choice. But maybe, if your job is killing you too, start thinking about an escape plan. Your body will eventually turn you into a pretzel otherwise. Nothing psychosomatic about that.

I’ve been asked to volunteer some time to speak on local crime as a person with experience in Security and depending on what they’re expecting they’re either gonna love it or hate it, I can see no middle ground

P much all crime is a convergence of means, motive, and opportunity, ime, and it’s impossible to eliminate means, which leads me to think that all we can actually DO to “stop” crime is reduce motive and reduce opportunity.

If a community can tackle Reducing Motives- offering safe distribution sites, shelter, food pantries, mental health, clothing, education, outreach, etc

And private businesses and individuals take responsibility for Reducing Opportunity- hiring ACTUAL security, training staff, maintaining equipment, locking doors, not leaving valuables unattended, etc

Then that’s just. Most Crime

But everyone WANTS to just “lock up the bad apples so the streets are safe for the normal people” and that’s not….. Anything, actually

Think of crime as an ecological niche, if you empty it, it will get filled, if you make the niche unviable, it will be vacated willingly.

im sorry to break this to you but if you think that you can determine which jews are deserving of life and which are not, you are probably just an antisemite.

additional thoughts: it’s actually insane that people who aren’t jewish think they can define what is and isn’t harmful to us. it’s even MORE insane that they think they can choose which of us is even worthy of being alive.

if you think that israelis should all die, you literally want to kill more jews than the amount hitler killed. you are a fucking nazi.

if you think all “zionists” should die, you are admitting you want (approx) 90% of jews to die. you are a fucking nazi.

if you don’t want jews living in israel, maybe you should stop fucking killing us everywhere else. it’s like you don’t want us living anywhere. you want us to be murdered. you are a fucking nazi.

and if you use the word “nazi” as a stand in for “racist”, “white supremacist” (all nazis are white supremacists but not all white supremacists are nazis), “person who’s politics i disagree with” or anything other than what nazism actually is, you don’t have the right to call anyone a fucking nazi. especially when you’re out here preaching nazi shit.

jewish people should be enough. we should be human enough for you to care about us.

you shouldn’t have to tack on “but the nazis killed other groups too” to care about the shoah. even though its true, if it was only jews being murdered, you should still fucking care.

you shouldnt have to bring up the ethnic or religious background of people who either murder us or save us from being murdered to care about the fact someone is trying to murder jews for being jews.

you shouldn’t have to bring up ANY OTHER ISSUE to say that RAPING JEWISH PEOPLE TO DEATH FOR BEING JEWISH IS BAD. it should be bad enough.

you shouldn’t have your opinion on whether rape is bad or not be dictated by ANY FACTOR OF A PERSONS IDENTITY. there is no fucking context that matters there.

you shouldn’t have to disparage white passing ashkenazi jews or claim they aren’t “real” jews to talk about antisemitism. you shouldn’t be using blood quantum to determine who is and isn’t a “real” jew or whether a person is indigenous or not.

you shouldn’t need someone who isn’t jewish to tell you something is bad. you should listen to us. you should see us as actual human beings with autonomy. people who deserve to advocate for ourselves, but also, as people who shouldn’t have to be the only ones advocating.

stop killing us.

stop telling us what our own words mean.

stop policing how we speak about antisemitism.

stop using our tragedies as your philosophical debate club circle jerk.

stop treating us like we don’t exist.

i want all of us to remember december 14th 2025 as a moment of no return, when it became really unquestionably obvious to me that it has become open season for jews. you can’t hide behind the fallacy that it’s just israelis (as if that was ever supposed to be acceptable). i say this because the exemptions for why it’s acceptable to mass murder jews are no longer interrogated. once you have an excuse, once you can claim that the ten year old girl and the holocaust survivor you murdered were “zionists” is the moment the bell tolls. ask not for whom, you braindead sniveling fucks.

i feel like a bunch of white people planning hate crimes and terrorist attacks with bombs and shit under the guise of something called “turtle island liberation front” should be recognized for what they are: white people using native american identity and suffering for their own political purposes

As a side issue, it has been pointed out that referring to all of North America as “Turtle Island” (a reference to a creation story from a native cultural group from only one part of North America) is implying that all Native cultures are interchangeable, which is something that non-Natives can’t seem to stop ourselves from doing

i think it’s important to acknowledge that the reason why mastercard/visa has such a stranglehold on american society is because cash is not the main form of payment in the usa. the predominance of card has effectively privatized currency

in japan, one of the reasons why dlsite and other similar websites are able to just remove visa as a payment option instead of changing any of their merchandise (aside from the fact that visa doesn’t have a monopoly here) is because cash payments for online transactions remain an option. even if you don’t have a jcb credit card or paypay or whatever, you can still pay for your online purchases using cash by taking your barcode to a convenience store, and you can do this for essentially every online vendor, meaning credit card companies can’t just impose their moral judgments on your purchases with much repercussion

How does that barcode system work? I’ve never heard of something like that.

1. you add whatever porn games or movies or books you want to your cart and go to checkout

2. you select cash payment at conbini as your payment method

3. youre emailed a barcode that you take to the conbini

4. you show it to the cashier, they scan it, and you pay what you owe. note that the cashier does not see what youre buying

and the transaction is complete

from the notes im learning that brazil also something similar. based tbh

Mexico too, there are multiple convenience stores you can pay at, sometimes you can also pay directly at the bank if it is offered even if you’re not a client of said bank.

…mayhaps a good idea for us Americans to try out

Everyone knows this, along with the fact that immigrants commit less crime than the general population. That’s one of the reasons why crime rates are falling.

They’re apparently 30 and 40 year olds from well-off families. Of COURSE they’ll add “Magical Indian belief/culture gestalt consciousness” to their belief structure as they perform their radicalized cultic activities while they search for meaning as shitty failchildren.
