For the Summer Games, athletes representing the Netherlands first competed at the Games of the II Olympiad Paris 1900, taking part in the sports or disciplines of archery, athletics, track cycling, fencing, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming and tennis. At the Games of the II Olympiad Paris 1900, athletes representing the Netherlands won a first Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the mixed sailing 3-10T race one event. At the same edition of the Games, athletes representing the Netherlands won a first Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s rowing coxed pairs event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing the Netherlands first competed at the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928, taking part there in the disciplines of bobsleigh and speed skating. At the VI Olympic Winter Games Oslo 1952, Cornelis Broekman became the first athlete representing the Netherlands to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s speed skating 5,000m event. At the IX Olympic Winter Games Innsbruck 1964, Sjoukje Dijkstra became the first athlete representing the Netherlands to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s figure skating individual event.

At Beijing 2022, the Netherlands continued its trend of winning most of its medals in speed skating, but the NOC also enjoyed its most successful Games in short track speed skating. Suzanne Schulting was the short track star for Netherlands in Beijing, winning gold in the women's 1000m and women's 3000m relay, as well as picking up silver in the women's 500m and bronze in the women's 1500m. Schulting had won gold in the women's 1000m at PyeongChang 2018, meaning her victories in Beijing made her the first athlete representing Netherlands to win more than one Winter Games gold medal in short track speed skating. In speed skating, Irene Schouten was the NOC's standout performer in Beijing, winning three gold medals in the women's 3000m, women's 5000m and women's mass start events to become the second female Dutch athlete to win three speed skating gold medals at a single edition of the Games after Yvonne van Gennip first achieved the feat at Calgary 1988. Outside the skating rinks, the Netherlands also picked up its first ever medal in skeleton in Beijing, as Kimberley Bos took bronze in the women's individual event, four years after finishing eighth in the same event at PyeongChang 2018. The Netherlands also came close to a snowboarding medal in Beijing, with Michelle Dekker finishing fourth in the women's parallel giant slalom event, which was the NOC's best snowboarding result since Nicolien Sauerbreij won gold in the same event at Vancouver 2010. Also in Beijing, the Netherlands took part in Alpine skiing for the first time since 1988, and figure skating for the first time since 1976.
