For the Summer Games, athletes representing Slovenia first competed at the Games of the XXV Olympiad Barcelona 1992, taking part there in the sports or disciplines of archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, canoe slalom, road cycling, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and tennis. At the Games of the XXV Olympiad Barcelona 1992, Denis Zvegelj and Iztok Cop became the first athletes representing Slovenia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s rowing pair without coxswain event. At the Games of the XXVII Olympiad Sydney 2000, the first athletes representing Slovenia to win Olympic gold medals did so on the same day, competing in the men’s rowing double sculls 2x event as well as in the men’s shooting 50m rifle 3 positions 3x40 shots event. For the Olympic Winter Games, athletes representing Slovenia first competed at the XVI Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992, taking part in the sport or disciplines of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing and ski jumping. At the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, Alenka Dovzan became the first athlete representing Slovenia to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the women’s alpine skiing alpine combined event. At the XXII Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014, Tina Maze became the first athlete representing Slovenia to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s alpine skiing downhill event.

After claiming one silver and one bronze at PyeongChang 2018, Slovenia bounced back at Beijing 2022 to win two gold among eight total medals, which equalled the NOC's previous best golden haul from Sochi 2014. In Beijing, four of the NOC's medals came in ski jumping. Ursa Bogataj won gold while Nika Kriznar took bronze in the women's individual normal hill, and the NOC also picked up two team medals - gold in the mixed team normal hill and silver in the men's team large hill. Bogataj's triumph made her the first athlete representing Slovenia to win a ski jumping gold medal at the Winter Games. Slovenia also took silver in the men's Alpine skiing giant slalom event thanks to Zan Kranjec, which was the NOC's first Alpine skiing medal since Tina Maze won two gold at Sochi 2014. Also in Beijing, Slovenia took home two medals in snowboarding - Tim Mastnak claimed silver in men's parallel giant slalom, while Gloria Kotnik took bronze in women's parallel giant slalom at her fourth Games to become Slovenia's first female Winter Games medallist in snowboarding.
