For the Summer Games, one athlete representing Australia, first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sports of athletics and tennis. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, Edwin Flack became the first athlete representing Australia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s athletics 1,500m event. For the Winter Games, one athlete representing Australia first competed at the IV Olympic Games Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936, participating in the discipline of speed skating. At the XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 1994, athletes representing Australia won a first Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s short track speed skating 5,000m relay event. At the XIX Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002, Steven Bradbury became the first athlete representing Australia to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the men’s short track speed skating 1,000m event.
At Beijing 2022, Australia ended a 12-year wait for Winter Games gold, having last stood atop the podium at Vancouver 2010 thanks to snowboarder Torah Bright's victory in the women's halfpipe event. Freestyle skier Jakara Anthony broke the drought in Beijing, claiming victory in the women's moguls four years after finishing fourth in the same event at PyeongChang 2018. Anthony was one of four Australian medallists in Beijing, but the only one to win gold. Snowboarder Tess Coady took bronze in women's slopestyle, while Jaclyn Narracott secured Australia's first medal in skeleton as she claimed silver in the women's individual event. Rounding out the NOC's medallists in Beijing was men's halfpipe snowboarder Scotty James, who went one better than his 2018 bronze medal to claim silver in 2022.
