First tidbits

Obviously UK physical game sales are hardly representative of anything, but Resident Evil Requiem had a much bigger UK physical launch than the RE 4 Remake and RE Village. Capcom has done it again.

I've been fascinated to see how Resident Evil Requiem would fare on Switch 2. UK physical data is in, and it hasn't done huge numbers on Switch 2. But it did more in its first week than Mario Tennis Fever. It's broadly the same as what Cyberpunk 2077 did last year (physical)

Obviously apples/oranges given different physical/digital splits but how did it compare to Xbox retail?

It did more, but as you say, Xbox is a much more digital platform

Excellent launch for Requiem, beating the most recent entries despite the quick decline of physical in the UK.

This looks like the Switch 2 version of RE9 is above 4.5k units, Xbox below. Of course, the latter should have a large digital share so we don't have the full picture yet.

The “art” of reporting: choosing whether to provide context and explanations (covid/userbase/digital/etc)...

or choosing not to. At least mention a huge difference in userbases? Nah

The reaction in the comments is exactly what you’d expect — Nintendo is “doomed,” Switch 2 is “for kids,” and by tomorrow this will be everywhere.

I'm confused, is this saying RE9 on Switch 2 did about the same physical launch week numbers as the very late port of Cyberpunk? Aren't there a lot more Switch 2 units now? And this is a day 1 release.

Congrats to Capcom and RE9. Well deserved.

That is indeed what he is saying. Though it did more than Mario Tennis Fever, take that as you will. It was either Capcom or Square who recently spoke about the ease of Switch 2 porting, so I take that to mean any additional sales are worth the effort. Not the old days when you had to sell your kidney to port some games.

You’ve barely got anything like that in the thread from looking at it.

We don’t need to be making stuff up to push a narrative. Especially it is the reality that RE9 didn’t sell big on Switch 2 but more than Mario Tennis physical at least, and that the addition context from Dring is that third party sales on slow on the system.

One thing to take into mind is that Chris is saying that Cyberpunk isn't successful, while CDPR said it was.

It seems undeniable that he puts context into bad PS5 sales while bad Nintendo sales never get any context. He even went as far as comparing Donkey Kong Bananza's launch sales to Mario Odyssey to make it seem like it underperformed, when the reality was that it easily outsold Astro Bot that Dring tried to make out as a big success when it launched.

How does the Generations pack get accounted for? Going by amazon rankings that is far and away the more popular SKU (over three times the sales and sold out). Given it includes two extra games and at most places is only £13 more than the standard version it seems obvious that will be the main seller on Switch 2. Curious how that gets played out in the data and whether it's counted individually or as one sale per game - in which case we would likely see Village / RE7 re-enter the charts

In that same tweet, he said he added them

Damn, finally a game having a better launch on UK that the last one.

It seems that the Switch 2 didnt do that hot, despite the heavy Switch 2 marketing

Do you know how tiny the Switch 2 user base is compared to PS5 in the UK? And adding to that is the fact that PS of course has much more core RE fans than a Nintendo ecosystem that until RE9 didn't get a new game in decades.

It will take time for the userbase to show up regularly for third party ports on Switch 2. Capcom seems committed to supporting it.

Switch 2 has a higher userbase compared to ps5 when village released

Everything depends on capcom expectation

Re did get good nintendo marketing with amibio and stuff

Anyways for uk, PS5 is very strong and even with small user base this was the village split in retail

49% of its sales were on PS5, 31% on PS4 and 20% on Xbox.

The audience for AAA games in general value visuals over portability, while indies and pixel art games thrive more on portables. That means that most people that own both a Switch 2 and a PS5 would play games like Re9 on PS5 over playing it portable on Switch 2.

Why would a ton of RE fans in the UK be on Switch 2? Launch sales are all about established fans buying the game, which means other platforms will naturally have the clear majority of those gamers. Switch 2 sales will mostly come from people double dipping as well as a few Nintendo console only gamers buying the game. There is a reason why Level 5 games sell better on Switch, because their audience is more likely to be on Nintendo consoles than on PS, same principle.

I'd say sales of the Switch 2 version of RE9 are fine, it aligns with the size of its install base and the (mostly lackluster) history the Resident Evil IP has had with Nintendo platforms over the past 2 decades.

Why are you getting defensive

I just claified over the userbase thing

Ps5 version did better then PS4 version despite a low userbase.

Re fans being more on PlayStation and uk very strong are legit points

But nintendo and resident did have good marketing as well this time

When was the last time a new Resident Evil game appeared on a Nintendo platform day and date as the others? It takes a while to build a fanbase. It outdoing Mario Tennis Fever's first week is a decent start IMO.

As always, it's best to wait a few days for the revised figures to start appearing and change the picture.

Dring's history of reporting on Nintendo means I've put him into a permanent ignore list.

Anybody who takes him seriously is only driving themselves insane.
Dring's Nintendo reporting: "DK Bananza sold less than the best selling 3D Mario game ever at launch", " his Sony reporting: "Astro Bot was the best selling non 3D Mario platformer".

I think we can ignore the way Dring delivers the information, but it is still information nonetheless.

We know that Requiem had a debut on the same level as Cyberpunk 2077 and above Mario Tennis.

Dring mentions it did better than XBox in the comments. “Hasn’t done huge numbers” doesn’t say too much to me, especially when some versions have sold out at retail.

People need to be open to the possibility that maybe the Switch 2 will not drive as high a number of sales as many people used to think.
How dare you! Smite the mighty NSW2! Not on this forum!

lol jokes aside. This is a large portion of what the NSW created…these Nintendo fans that are very passionate & that need the NSW or in this case the NSW2 to receive every single victory or reach these crazy highs again, & again. I get it. It’s fun to feel like your team is winning (not to say this is some console war nonsense) a lot more could be said & this is absolutely not to be insulting or anything of the nature just my observation of what I have seen & I am not implying it’s a bad thing either these are some very passionate Nintendo fans but you are exactly right there is absolutely a reality where Nintendo doesn’t reach these highs & that’s okay! They are doing fine & we don’t need it let our emotions rule us.

Good point being brought up.

... what?

Yeah, sometimes its really hard to discuss something when its just about the Switch 2 being ahead of everything and that "everyone hates the Switch 2 and its games"

Would have liked to see better numbers from the Switch 2 version given how well it is made and that it is day and date. That said, Capcom hasn't released a mainline Resident Evil game on Nintendo platforms day and date in like 20 years. I guess if we include Revelations it was a one and done 14 years ago.

So I would have hoped for better than this but not that much better. And keeping in mind the softness of the Switch 2 in the UK and that it is still at a low install base and it doesn't seem too bad.

Fingers crossed digital brings it up more. I expect this one to have a longer tail.

People need to be open to the possibility that maybe the Switch 2 will not drive as high a number of sales as many people used to think.

I think most people know this. I do not expect Switch 2 to suddenly become a bastion for third party sales but I think it should see a healthy growth over Switch 1 as time goes on and if they can get the value proposition up. That said, we do this same thing with UK sales over and over. Other markets numbers need to come in along with digital so we can make better judgements.

Good (for Capcom, the industry and the Switch2) to see Requiem (the first real day1 third party release) already performing better on NSW2 than Xbox even in the UK

We saw with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined that Switch 2 can be very strong with 3rd party releases but IPs that have a long, strong presence on Nintendo platforms will have an advantage

PlayStation has a higher fanbase of *insert an IP who hasn't been on Nintendo platform since years* than Nintendo.
And UK has a higher PlayStation fanbase than Nintendo.

So...

I'm confused, is this saying RE9 on Switch 2 did about the same physical launch week numbers as the very late port of Cyberpunk? Aren't there a lot more Switch 2 units now? And this is a day 1 release.

It's not really a surprise. Across all 4 versions of Requiem, Switch is the worst other than if you own an XSS. It really depends on what Switch 2 multi console owners look like and how many are just Switch 2 owners, as outside of handheld mode, why would you buy Requiem on it if you're gaming on a 4k TV and have another device that plays it better? I do wonder what percent of Switch 2 owners have no other device.

I'm a switch 2 owner, but that's just for Nintendo titles and exclusives, everything else I get on another platform and I'm sure people like me are why Requiem has and will sell lowest on switch in the west.

Cyberpunk had the "OMG look at this in handheld mode" double dip novelty at launch when the switch 2 was new.

So the Switch 2 version sold more than the Xbox version in the UK after all ? This makes the initial comments even weirder.

Requiem is such a massive win and achievement for Capcom. Not sure why it was necessary to single out the Switch 2 from the overall success of the game.

When publishers are happy with sales, platform holder reach expected sales i don't know how much of value there is to be consistently expect much more than the companies actually selling these things.

Important things to note when reading Chris Dring report
*He has the sales data
*He has his oppinions

Take the sales data but not his oppinions.

The era of most people having multiple platforms is over, higher console prices and game prices and inflation makes it way harder. I expect most Switch 2 owners to have only a Switch 2

this is the Uk sales thread and none of those images are visible in the UK...

Not really, we need digital data to say that
We are obv. just talking about physical data since thats what the charts are based on.

So you can say XX is doing worse than YY.
But saying AA is doing better than BB is not possible, because we lack digital data ?

No one is expecting the Switch 2 version to outperform PS/Xbox version in the UK, its not possible just based on install base alone, let alone at launch.

Still the fact that,if true, it outperformed the Xbox version at launch in retail is noteworthy.

The thing is that Xbox is doing notoriously bad at retail.
So while Switch 2 above can be notable it's not really unexpected.

Also install base is an overestimate factor in sales.

Core gamers move fast on new platforms.
That's why despite a very small install base at the time, 49% of RE8 sales were on PS5 vs 30% for PS4.

Another recent exemple is Dragon Quest selling more on Switch 2 than Switch.

So the disavantage still exist but it's not as massive as we could look just by doing basic install base comparison.

The casual audience is the one that take a while to come but it's not the audience that will buy games day one.

Eh I'm not so sure. Things are going up in price but there's still a lot of people who already had a PS5/PC/etc. before buying Switch 2.

Feels like this is something easier to discern in a few years.

As a rule of thumb, don't waste time and saliva over something not worth it.

I know it's basics but it doesn't hurt to mention it sometimes.

Yeah but is a useless comparison that tell us nothing about the real and complete performance of the game in UK, as this two platform have completly different digital ratio

You did pretty much say exactly that though.

It does come across like that.

Nobody got emotional about the numbers, just about context being left out.

I tried to calculate it using records.

For the 7 Switch games released between 14.87-19.67M Switch install base in Nintendo IR.

Install base +100% results in sales +31% to +53% after launch quarter.

So I think it accounts for 40% of all factors for similar period.
