I met Alex once when I was bartending while a student, he’d come to town to give a talk at the university and they were having a drinks reception in the restaurant I worked at. When he came to order I told him I was fan and he stopped to chat, asking about my time at uni, what philosophy I enjoyed, etc., while the entire drinks reception was trying to get his attention to ask philosophical questions. Dr. K’s trying to solve a problem, Greg thinks the problem is already solved but no one wants the solution and Alex is toying around with whether or not there is a problem in the first place and what that even means. Kinda just feels like everyone’s just talking past eachother.

Very strange how no one engages with what Dr. K says about meaning and his data driven approach. The other two are so concerned about truth that dont really interact with the way the psychiatrist is framing the question. They evade all practical matters to discuss about these grand ideas. I still find it interesting but if we’d get more discussion about the practicality of finding purpose, I might have found this conversation helpful.

It’s kind of funny because the Christian guy’s definition of purpose is this grand, God-given calling. Alex’s definition is a deeply philosophical, almost existential sense of life’s meaning. And Dr. K’s definition is more practical: a feeling of satisfaction in life that comes from having control and doing what you actually want to do. Thats why they keep butting heads slightly haha
