Early-stage venture firm investing in visionary founders building disruptive software businesses. Based in LA, NYC, SF.

About us

M13 is an early-stage (seed and Series A) venture capital firm that invests in visionary founders building disruptive software businesses. Established in 2016 with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, we are a full-stack partner that brings a deep bench of full-time operators to help founders outperform and build category-defining companies. Our Propulsion model helps founders execute faster and with less capital towards better outcomes, with 3x people on our Propulsion team for every one investing team member. Our portfolio includes more than 200 direct investments, with 25 exits to date. M13 has seeded seven companies and been in the Series A of five others that went on to achieve unicorn status. Messier 13 (or M13) is one of the brightest star clusters in the northern sky. It’s full of remarkable individual stars, but when those stars come together, they create something that’s truly greater than the sum of its parts—inspiring the M13 philosophy of “brighter together.” We’re proud that M13 has been awarded as a Built In Best Place to Work in both LA and NYC multiple years running.

2026: the year CHROs, not engineers, are AI workforce architects. M13 partner Matt Hoffman predicts that this year, companies will embed AI in their strategy as part of what it truly is: a new architecture for how work gets done. The best ones will design agentic workflows from the ground up, deciding which tasks are owned by people, which are executed autonomously by AI systems, and how the two reinforce each other. Doing this well demands a different kind of leadership profile: close enough to the work to understand the nuances of product, operations and customer feedback and experienced enough to architect workflows and decide where human oversight is essential. And it requires a shift in ownership. AI’s impact is organizational, not just technical. These are not engineering questions, they are people questions. CHROs and talent leaders will become stewards of the AI transformation, defining how work gets done in truly AI-native companies. Power, policy and the human moat. What constrains scale matters as much as what enables it. Long-horizon thinking is grounded in an understanding of real markets, healthcare economics and the limits of automation. Today’s predictions reflect where naïve theses tend to break: Anna Barber on why New York is overtaking Silicon Valley as AI moves closer to regulated, customer-proximate markets, Win Chevapravatdumrong on AI governance shifting compliance from theory to execution, Sarah Tomolonius on the role of human judgment even as AI filters everything upstream and Evan Richardson on why GLP-1 access and coverage will remain a defining healthcare battleground in 2026. On Keep Going, John Biggs sits down with Karl Alomar, M13 Managing Partner and former COO of DigitalOcean, to talk about what actually happens when the floor drops out from under a company. Karl shares a formative story from his first startup, the kind founders rarely tell publicly, and the hard-earned lesson about building your support system before you need it. It is a candid conversation about resilience, leadership and why the people around you matter as much as the idea itself. Founders, partners, and sector experts shared what they believe will define 2026. Today let’s dive into the next platform wave with predictions from Rob Smith and Morgan Blumberg that point to a clear shift. Differentiation is moving away from model size and toward systems of action. The next leap in AI will come from physical models, embodied AI, and enterprise world models that learn from real environments, simulate outcomes and actually execute work. This is where durable platforms get built. “These systems learn from the real world rather than text using sensors and cameras to learn how the real world works, much like a human being does through experience,” says Rob. “The major advantage over LLMs is the nearly limitless amount of data they can process to continue to learn concepts related to science, medicine and human-to-human interactions, an area of weakness in LLMs.” “In 2026, intelligence shifts from “models that know things” to “models that understand and act within environments.” The winners will leverage world modeling, not model size, to automate knowledge work,” says Morgan. Check out the rest of our 2026 predictions in the link in the comments. 📸 : Morgan with Anna Barber, W. If you saw our recent M13 offsite photos, you may have noticed a surprising number of flowery print. Matt Hoffman shares why we wore all that floral and why our annual Dock-Ins are a key part of our culture, trust building, accountability and performance.

If - like me - you’re a big fan of M13, you’ve probably seen our holiday posting photos with the team from our December offsite. And if you’re also anything like me, you've probably noticed most of us wearing floral shirts and attire. Why are we doing this?  Was our offsite in Hawaii? Sadly, no. No it was not in Hawaii. This year we met up as a firm in lovely Carlsbad, California. Not exactly Honolulu or Maui (although La Jolla is quite beautiful), but more importantly it was a chance for the entire team to be together in the same place at the same time.  Why do we do this?  It’s because as a hybrid organization with offices in multiple cities we know how important it is to maximize the in-person connection. RTO is certainly back in fashion, but as a venture firm committed to on the ground presence in cities with the highest concentration of founders, we know we have to build strong communities in more than one location.  We have vibrant office cultures in NY, SF, and LA but we also have a number of fully remote employees and we’ve made the intentional decision to prioritize the quality of talent on the team over the location. But making that choice requires us to put in the work to build in-person connections.  And that’s where our yearly “Dock-Ins” come in. Over the course of 3 days we curate opportunities for everyone in the firm to work together (AI Hackathons!), play together (Murder Mysteries!) and get to know each other better as human beings. That’s how you truly drive trust, accountability, and ultimately performance.  Thank you to Arbo Shah, Xochilt Segundo and the entire team for consistently creating exceptional employee experiences. Oh - and the floral shirts! It’s because every year we design our Dock-ins thematically around the location. Carlsbad is known for it’s flower fields; thus BlooM13.  Last year was in Austin - so yes we wore Western attire for Texas Hold ‘Em13.  It’s a ritual we do build cohesiveness and community. And just one of the reasons we still think M13 is one of the best VC firms to work for.  Join us! https://www.m13.co/careers

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re celebrating another year of exceptional founders building the future. 🎉 ICYMI this year, we welcomed new companies into the M13 portfolio and doubled down on teams we backed early as they reached new milestones. Anything: the personal AI engineer enterprises need.  Avataros: building lifelike 3D avatars that are interactive, scale like software, and integrate anywhere.  Chord: infusing commerce data with artificial intelligence to drive success for e-commerce brands.  Daylight: building a consumer-grade decentralized energy network that helps homeowners produce, store, and share power back to the grid.  Estuary: making data pipelines dependable, cost-predictable and AI-ready.  Kontext: redefining advertising in generative AI applications with context-rich ad formats.  Makora (formerly Mako): unlocking peak GPU performance and reducing AI inference costs automatically.  Replenysh: creating a new supply chain with today’s trash.  Robyn 🪺: building emotionally intelligent AI that empowers self-discovery and connection. Sitch: using human expertise x AI to help users find people they’re actually compatible with.  Teleskope: turning detection into action in data security. We’re proud to continue supporting in these portcos and participate in their latest rounds: Allocate: building the future of wealth creation. Maven AGI: powering the enterprise end-to-end with business AGI.  Niural AI: agentic AI-powered, full-stack platform that automates payroll, benefits, vendor payments, and compliance.  Polimorphic: building an AI-powered platform that makes government work how it should. Grateful for this year and excited for the new. Happy New Year from all of us at M13. Thank you for being part of our constellation!

2025 made one thing clear: AI moved from possibility to pressure and who captures the value. What can we look forward to in 2026? We asked our partners and founders to share what they’re excited about for the new year and where platforms form, budgets unlock and how and where we will continue to exercise human judgment. If you’re building or investing through the next cycle, this is our clearest view of what’s ahead and what will actually compound – from infrastructure and data economics to healthcare adoption, labor, media, governance and naturally, human storytelling. Is storytelling an essential advantage in the AI era? Our 2026 predictions argues yes and goes further. As algorithms increasingly decide what gets seen, trusted and acted on, winning the market will take a system founders can architect and investors can underwrite, grounded in a clear what is the what and why should I care. Today’s predictions explore that shift: Brent Murri on how digital marketing changes with the first ChatGPT ad, Carter Reum on cultural commerce and fandom as the next infrastructure layer, and W. Christine Choi on why, when algorithms mediate attention, your story is your strategy. Check out the rest of our 2026 predictions in the link in the comments.

What will define 2026? Measurable AI ROI, data infrastructure and trust as a competitive edge. 2026 is the year of tangibility. The gap between technological promise and real-world impact will narrow. Potential becomes proof. Hype becomes measurable value. Systems get stress-tested. Infrastructure catches up to ambition. And leading companies are the ones building durable foundations: efficient infrastructure, fresh data, credible governance, human trust at scale. Founders in our constellation, along with our partners and sector experts, shared what they believe will define the next year of economic dualities, regulation and realignment, infrastructure innovation, monetization and human trust. Check out their 2026 predictions in the link in comments. Healthcare is in a moment of reckoning, writes M13 portco RadiantGraph founder Anmol Madan. Regulatory shifts and the growing expectations of digital native healthcare consumers are exposing inefficiencies the industry can no longer ignore. Cost pressure, staffing shortages and shifting care models demand something more scalable and sustainable. “AI isn’t a magic wand,” Anmol says. “But when it’s applied where it matters, turning generic outreach into personalized, closed-loop workflows that save staff time, improve member experience, and keep coverage and care on track, it can feel like one.” Read how AI is streamlining and scaling healthcare outreach by replacing manual, fragmented workflows with personalized, scalable automation at https://lnkd.in/gjZaUjnW

We used to have landlines, then we had voice-over IP. It was a bit of a transition to go from old world to new world—and then it was here very quickly. That same thing is happening in fintech, said M13 partner Latif Peracha on stage at WSJ Tech Live in Qatar, where companies like OpenFX are now moving money much cheaper and almost instantly. “You’ve got an archaic financial system that I think is going to get upended. It’s incredibly exciting to be in the early days of a tailwind that we think is going to be prevalent and make life better for institutions and consumers,” Latif said. “If that all works, you’re looking at a world that has greater output, greater GDP because of the way money can move quickly across the world.” See the full talk with OpenFX co-founder Prabhakar Reddy and The Wall Street Journal reporter Miriam Gottfried at the link in the comments.

To the SF teams in stealth mode working hard to turn ambition into reality: you don’t have to be loud to be noticed. We see you. M13 and our friends at Bain Capital Ventures (BCV) know how hard you work and how rarely you stop to celebrate. So we teamed up to host a holiday party worthy of your ambition. And because even stealth companies deserve a little star wattage we surprised everyone with an unannounced DJ set from Paris Hilton the iconic opposite of stealth and a brilliant operator and undercover nerd. She showed what it looks like to own your narrative and, when the time comes, go big. We believe in showing up for early stage founders while you're building. When you’re still validating, iterating and inventing community matters most. Nights like these bring that community to life across SF to celebrate the people doing the hard quiet unglamorous work of creating the next wave. Huge thanks to Rho, Niural AI, Fenwick & West, Hughes Marino, Frank, Rimerman + Co. LLP for making it happen. And to all the teams still flying under the radar, we’re cheering you on. And when you’re ready to step out of stealth we’ll be ready to help you shine. M13 co Anything is building the future of vibe coding. Below, see why app builders choose Anything Max to bring their ideas to life. Dhruv Amin Marcus Lowe Brent Murri

    Founder @ Anything

Introducing Anything Max: vibe coding that's leaps above Lovable and Bolt We've raised money at a $100M valuation to build what we believe is the future of vibe coding. We asked 100 vibe coders to build their apps side by side on Lovable, Bolt, and Anything Max and they rated Anything Max the winner across all 3 categories - accuracy, design, and 'overall'. Here's why: • Full-stack control: Max can test backend hooks, branch database states, and debug issues, because Anything owns the full infrastructure. • Max can load up your app in its own browser and click on all buttons like a human tester to find all edge case bugs, then trace the bug across the stack - could be a frontend, backend, or a database issue (only we can do this) and autonomously fix it with 97% accuracy. Lovable and Bolt build prototypes, but Max users are building production-ready apps and already charging money for them. Blake built a gut biome app to $10K run rate Anthony built a referral tool to $20k in revenue Yuri built a suite of apps doing $40K Build your app with Max: https://lnkd.in/gPvMXitw ************************************************** We're hosting a $100K Hackathon to help people grow their app to $10K MRR. Hackathon participants get: - Guide on how to get 100 paying customers for any app (has community, content, and product tactics we used to get our first 1000+ customers) - How to rank top 5 on Product Hunt (what we did) - 50 validated app ideas that are easy to build and can make you your first $10K. - Advanced Vibe Coding Guide: technical roadmap for going from idea to real app. - $100 discount on Anything Max and a motivating group building alongside you If you do it well, you can start the New Year with a functioning business. Comment “Anything Max”, and we’ll send you a $100 discount code and the link to participate.

Pricing in AI has officially hit the “funhouse mirror” stage. As Marc Vartabedian reports in The Wall Street Journal, usage spikes, outcome-based fees and shifting definitions of ARR make it harder than ever to know what revenue really means. Founders now have more pricing flexibility in an AI usage based world— and far more scrutiny. M13 partner Anna Barber captured the core issue with AI usage models: “Very quickly the value devolves to nothing because you have an AI recruiter talking to an AI candidate.” Not all growth is real growth, especially when AI-on-AI activity inflates the signal. Private markets are becoming a foundational element of modern portfolio construction - and it's creating a foundational change across modern wealth management. "Wealth advisors need the same caliber of access but with a more robust, streamlined workflow, compliance guardrails, and data that flows into their everyday tools. Ultimately that’s still just the beginning,” Peter Epstein, managing director at M13 co Allocate, told InvestmentNews. “It’s about how advisors leverage technology to deliver better client outcomes and more personalized alternative allocations that are bespoke to that specific client's risk, return, liquidity, and personal considerations. That can only happen on an infrastructure that is designed for that level of personalization.” Allocate is that infrastructure. Co-Founders Samir Kaji, Hana Yang, and team are equipping wealth advisory firms with the modern, intelligent infrastructure they need to seamlessly build and manage high-quality alternative portfolios with one modern technology interface. A big tech expo reminded M13 partner W. Christine Choi that friction slows us down enough to care and be cared for. "And friction, in a world obsessed with efficiency, is radical," she writes. In her latest post, she writes about how friction slows us down just enough to bump into each other, for unscheduled collisions, for pause and curiosity and exchange. She writes about how the disorientation of unfamiliarity and uncertainty might soften us---and that's how presence begins. Stablecoins have become the foundation of the next monetary revolution. And few investors understand what that means for financial markets better than M13's General Partner Latif Peracha. Next week at WSJ Tech Live in Qatar, Latif will join The Wall Street Journal’s Miriam Gottfried and OpenFX founder Prabhakar Reddy to unpack fintech trends and what’s already quietly reshaping the financial stack. Consider the backdrop: - Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent projects $3T in stablecoin-driven demand for dollars and Treasuries by 2030 - OpenFX scaled from $8B to $34B in monthly cross-border volume in five months - Central banks, regulators and global institutions are racing to define who controls stablecoins and movement across borders The panel will explore how neutral, compliant infrastructure like OpenFX might stabilize rather than destabilize global markets and what institutional investors need to understand about ownership, risk and the new pipes of capital movement. From cost savings to structural speed, from demo to infrastructure, this is the global financial rails story unfolding while everyone’s eyes are on AI.
