Hong Kong Free Press published its 10,000th article on Tuesday, two-and-a-half years after it launched as the city’s first crowdfunded media outlet.
Not-for-profit, free-of-charge and completely independent, HKFP invested heavily in original reporting in 2017.
We published features on topics such as: pro-LGBT Christians, sex workers, police stop-and-search, the plight of refugees, community cinema, public space, compensated dating, homelessness, the jailed democracy activists, shadow district councils, street harrassment, a Sikh temple, the crackdown on dissent, leader CY Leung’s tenure, poverty alleviation, a village under threat, exam pressure, filmmakers, ethnic minorities in politics, the rise of Carrie Lam, Buddhist politics, the pet trade and Hong Kong’s pro-Taiwan camp among others.
Over the past year, we have interviewed former governor Chris Patten, Hong Kong National Party founder Andy Chan, lawmaker Eddie Chu, legal scholar Johannes Chan, Ten Years producer Andrew Choi, barrister Philip Dykes, award-winning journalist Lotfullah Najafizada, Hong Kong leadership candidate Woo Kwok-hing, HKU chief Peter Mathieson, Occupy activist Ken Tsang, ex-lawmaker Ronny Tong, ousted lawmaker Baggio Leung, pro-independence group founder Tony Chung, legal activist Kwok Cheuk-kin, Macau’s ‘lone’ activist Jason Chao, human rights lawyer Michael Vidler and others.
Among other achievements this year, HKFP launched video content, a new Opinion section, a weekly newsletter, a merchandise store, and a new HKFP Patrons donor programme. We also gained access to government press conferences after a years-long battle, raised HK$510,000 in our 2017 Funding Drive, partnered with Dow Jones Factiva, and moved to a new base at The Hive, Kennedy Town.
HKFP was also cited in dozens of fellow news outlets across the world, and was the first to break dozens of key local stories in English.
