A-League Soccer Player Faces Court for Betting Scandal
Melbourne’s A-League club, Western United, is at the centre of a betting scandal following charges laid against Japanese midfielder Riku Danzaki and another player from a lower-tier competition. The Victoria Police sporting integrity intelligence unit alleges the duo manipulated yellow card outcomes in four matches during April and May 2025.

The investigation commenced after a bookmaker reported suspicious betting patterns related to disciplinary cards issued during games. Subsequent police operations in Richmond, West Melbourne, and Kingsville led to the arrest of a 25-year-old West Melbourne man and a 27-year-old Kingsville man. The 25-year-old faces ten charges, including engaging in conduct that corrupts betting outcomes and attempting to commit an indictable offence. The 27-year-old has been charged with 16 offences, encompassing corrupt conduct involving information for betting purposes and facilitating conduct that corrupts betting outcomes.

Western United confirmed one of its players has been charged, stating,
“The club is aware that one Western United player has been charged in relation to an alleged breach of sports betting guidelines. We take this matter seriously, condemn any actions that compromise the integrity of the game, and are cooperating fully with the investigation. Given the ongoing nature of the investigation, we cannot comment any further.”
Football Australia responded by issuing ‘no fault interim suspensions’ to the two individuals charged.
“Football Australia takes the integrity of the game very seriously and has worked closely with Victoria Police and the Australian Professional Leagues throughout this investigation,” the governing body said.
This incident follows a similar betting controversy in 2024 involving Macarthur FC players, highlighting ongoing concerns about the integrity of the sport.
