A teenager jailed yesterday for murdering a young man who bullied him was a gentle child who was remorseful for his crime, his lawyer said.
The Queensland Supreme Court heard that the youth had been taunted and bullied for months by a group of youths headed by Aiden Liyanage, 18. He plunged a steak knife into Mr Liyanage's neck in March last year and told police he believed it was the only way to stop the bullying.
The youth, 16 at the time, cannot be named. He was sentenced to seven years' jail after pleading guilty to murder.
Justice Cate Holmes said the youth had been under extraordinary stress. "There was no one to turn to for the support which someone his age should have been expected to receive," she said.
