Canberrans flock to Lake Burley Griffin to see out 2024 with a bang

Thousands of people lined the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to catch a glimpse of the 9pm fireworks display.

After a pared-back 2023 display drew substantial criticism, the ACT government brought back midnight New Year's Eve fireworks, at some expense.

But that didn't stop the crowds rolling out for the early show.

One of the pryotechnicians behind tonight's displays gave The Canberra Times an early insight into the type of fireworks set to be showcased.

It was a near-perfect evening to be outdoors on Tuesday, December 31.

The temperature peaked at 29 degrees late in the afternoon before a cool change blew through central Canberra.

As the clock wound down to 2025, a fresh wind took the edge off the summer heat in the evening, taking the temperature below 20 degrees before the first round of fireworks.

There was a small threat of rain in the afternoon, but the heavier stuff steered clear of territory, with areas around Goulburn copping a hammering, leading to some power outages.
