What is Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix?

Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix is our wackily-wheeled world of crazy creativity, where teams of amateur drivers pool their creative talents to define the rules of street racing, and create their own homemade Trolley to race on a main stage. Hold on to your helmets!
The first Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix was held in Belgium in 2000 and since then it’s spread around the world, with over 100 events being held in 52 countries globally .

When is the event and where is it held?

The New Zealand race is going to be held in Auckland on Saturday 15TH February, 2025.

What time does it start and finish?

It is an all-day event with gates opening in the morning and the race finishing late afternoon. Specific event times will be released as we get closer to the event.

How do I apply to take part in the event?

All applications for Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix are digital this year, so everything can be done at the click of a button! To apply, visit the Application tab on the event page – fill out the form and upload your sketch to submit your application to Race Control.

Can anyone take part?

Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix is open to any amateur drivers aged 18 years or older who are fuelled by creativity and competitive fun – not to mention the need for speed!

When does the application period close?

The deadline for applications is Friday 27th September 2024 so if you want to be considered please make sure you’ve completed your form by then!

Can I update/change my application once it’s been submitted?

We’d prefer if you wait until you’ve got everything confirmed 100% before you submit your application, however we do appreciate that things can change from time to time. If this does happen, please email us at trolleygrandprix.nz.smb@redbull.com as soon as possible.

Does the design we submit in our application have to match the Trolley used in the event?

100% – the design. All teams have to confirm that they understand this when they submit their application, and that if their design doesn’t match, then Red Bull has the right to prevent them from taking part in the event.

Can I send Red Bull a model of our design?

Whilst we love receiving Trolley models, we ask that you join us in our commitment to sustainability by not sending us a physical model in the post. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to send us your supporting material (photos, sketches, videos etc.) when you fill in your application form online! We encourage you to be as wild and creative with this to help us visualise your design in all its glory!

How many teams are selected?

As this is a single day event, spaces are limited – only a total of 50 teams will be selected to take part.

Are there special rules & regulations that need to be considered when designing a Trolley?

Yes – all Trolley designs must comply with set regulations that can be found on the ‘Rules’ tab. All designs are checked against these criteria during the judging period, and if a design fails to comply then your Trolley won’t be approved to make the start line.

I’m a student and would love to apply but I’m not sure I’ve got the right resources. Is there any help or support?

We encourage ingenious students from around the country to get involved and will offer up to five student grants consisting of $1,000 to support costs to build your Trolley. To be eligible, each of the 4-5 team members must be currently enrolled in university or equivalent education programme. More information, check out our Young Constructors Grant

Will you be offering accessibility seating for the event?

We will have an accessible seating area onsite for spectators.
