Responding to a viral clip of Vance, Kerstin Emhoff, who shares two kids with Doug Emhoff , rejected criticism of Harris over her lack of biological children as “baseless”. She asserted that Harris is an equal parent of their children.

“For over 10 years since Cole and Ella were teenagers, Kamala has been a co-parent with Doug and I,” she told CNN.

Hailing Harris for being loving and nurturing, Kerstin said the US VP has fiercely protective of their kids. “I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it.”

JD Vance takes brutal dig at Kamala Harris

Her comments came after Vance's 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News host, went viral on social media.

In the interview, Vance stated that the US was led by those who don't have a “direct stake” in the country that is “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

Trump's running mate went on to say, “Look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC—the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children.”

Kamala Harris reveals why her step kids call her ‘Momala’

Harris has been affectionately referred to as “Momala” by two kids of Emhoff, with whom she got married in 2014.

In a 2019 essay in in Elle Magazine, she explained how the name “Momala” was introduced and called her stepchildren as her “endless source of love and pure joy.”

“A few years later when Doug and I got married, Cole, Ella, and I agreed that we didn’t like the term “stepmom.” Instead they came up with the name “Momala”,” she wrote.

Harris further lauded Kerstin as a “dear friend” and and “incredible mother”.

Weather Bee | July's sudden warming surge leads to the warmest day globally on record

Jul 26, 2024 08:00 AM IST

A sharp rise in global temperatures has been recorded since July 18, reaching new daily highs and emphasising the volatility of climate patterns

Last week, this column argued that it would not be surprising if the warming relative to pre-industrial levels fell below 1.5°C this month. This was because no day in the first half of the month had reached or breached the 1.5°C threshold, a significant trend when seen in the context of temperatures in the past year. This trend has reversed in the past week. The 1.5°C warming threshold, one of the important goals of the Paris Agreement for long-term average of temperatures, was breached every day from July 18 to July 23. Moreover, the global average temperature reached its highest-ever recorded level on July 22. These trends highlight how unpredictable weather has become in the climate crisis.

PREMIUM
A cyclist rides towards a thermometer that reads 45 degrees Celsius on a street of Seville on July 23, 2024. July 21, 2024 was the hottest day ever registered globally, according to preliminary data published on July 23, 2024 by the EU's climate monitor. The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said the global average surface air temperature on July 21 was 17.09 degrees Celsius, a fraction above the previous record set in 2023. (Photo by CRISTINA QUICLER / AFP)(AFP)

The sharp reversal in the past week can be seen by comparing the averages for different periods of the month. The average warming in the month — from July 1 to any date up to July 17 — had hovered between 1.36°C to 1.39°C. This number has increased continuously from July 18 and the average warming for the month was 1.45°C on July 23, the latest day for which this data is available.

While the average warming in July so far is below the level seen last year at this time (average warming of 1.53°C on July 23), the sharp rise in warming in the past week is a big departure from the trend seen in the 30 days before that. Warming had been steady and below the 1.5°C mark every day from June 18 to July 17. This 30-day streak was the longest since June 6 last year, and a break from the trends seen in the past year. The second-longest streak after June 6 last year was a 22-day streak that ended on July 2, 2023. Between August 20, 2023, and May 4, 2024, no streak of under 1.5°C warming had been longer than four days. This suggested that warming in global temperatures may be moderating after the end of El Niño, a periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean that adds to global temperatures. That may not necessarily be the case.

Chart 1

This increase in warming seen in the past week has also made another temperature record. There is now a new record for the top three warmest days recorded on Earth. The average global temperatures recorded from July 21 to July 23 – 17.09°C, 17.16°C, and 17.15°C — are now the three highest daily temperatures recorded on Earth. This record was held previously by the average temperatures for July 6 (17.08°C), July 7 (17.07°C), and July 5 (17.06°C) in 2023.

To be sure, at least so far, the record for the warmest day is not held by a day when the daily temperature warmed up the most compared to the pre-industrial average. The temperature on July 22 was 1.697°C warmer than the pre-industrial average. While this is a very high level of warming, it is ranked “only” 146th highest in history. The reason July 22 temperature became the warmest on record despite this is that even the pre-industrial average for July 22 is high. This is because July is a summer month in the northern hemisphere and the late June-early August period usually sees the peak of global temperatures in absolute terms. The global average of temperature follows the trends of the northern hemisphere because this is where most of the land on Earth is. Since land warms and cools down faster than water, temperature variations over land drive global temperature variations.

Chart 2

This brings us to the most important question. What led to the change in the warming trends this past week? It is not possible to analyse this independently right now, because the detailed ERA5 data, whose averages were used for this analysis, comes with a lag. The data for the period after July 18 will only become available in the coming days. However, a Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) statement has suggested that the sudden spike in warming may be related to high levels of warming over large parts of Antarctica. Warming over Antarctica has been very high in recent years partly because of the effects of global warming. As the Earth warms up, it decreases the extent of ice at the poles. This allows the polar regions to warm up faster because ice reflects sunlight and helps in keeping temperatures cool. As the region warms up because of a lack of ice, it melts even more ice, pushing it into a vicious cycle.

Read together, these trends highlight how unpredictable global weather has become due to the unforeseen levels of warming being recorded since last year. While the end of El Niño might have stopped the additional heat being pumped out from the seas, it was not enough to keep global warming below the 1.5°C mark for more than 30 days.

Abhishek Jha, HT’s assistant editor-data, analyses one big weather trend in the context of the ongoing climate crisis every week, using weather data from ground and satellite observations spanning decades.

Nikki Haley says she won't ‘apologize’ for past criticism of Donald Trump, but will do THIS

Jul 26, 2024 08:09 AM IST

Former presidential hopeful Nikki Haley won't retract comments against Donald Trump despite calling him “toxic” and “unhinged.”

The former presidential hopeful Nikki Haley while sitting down with CNN, affirmed that she would not “apologize or take anything back” for her comments against former President Donald Trump; all the more, she has made a U-turn by supporting his candidacy.

Haley said Trump was “toxic,” “unhinged”, and lacked “moral clarity” during GOP convention last week.

“I said a lot of tough things about him in the campaign. He said a lot of tough things about me in the campaign. That’s what happens in campaigns. I don’t think we need to apologize or take anything back. I don’t plan on doing that,” Haley remarked, acknowledging that she would still vote for the candidate she once labelled as “chaos.”

During the campaign, Trump did not hold back either, directing harsh remarks towards his former UN Ambassador. He mocked Haley’s husband’s military service and dubbed her “bird brain Nikki Haley.” Despite this, Haley shifted her stance in May and publicly pledged her support for Trump, even though she had previously said in February that there was “no need to kiss the ring.”

She also noted, “I don’t agree with Trump 100% of time, and I don’t expect them to agree with Trump 100% of the time to vote for him. But I wanted them to think about it through my eyes and how I thought about it.”

Haley also sent a cease and desist letter to a PAC of her former supporters, “Haley Voters for Harris.”

Haley unsurprised by Biden's decision to pass torch to Harris

Haley's interview also touched upon President Joe Biden’s decision to pass the presidential torch to Kamala Harris after one term. She expressed that she was not surprised by this decision. “Through the whole campaign, I fought for mental competency tests. I wasn’t doing it to be disrespectful. I wasn’t doing it to be mean. I was doing it because I think it’s not just Joe Biden,” Haley said, and “it’s a problem for the American people.”

“I never thought he would make it to the election. I always said a vote for Joe Biden is a vote for Kamala Harris, and I think that’s what’s playing out.”

In January, Haley had stated that “the first party to retire its 80-year-old candidate is going to be the one who wins this election.”

Despite these earlier views, she lauded Trump in a speech to the Republican National Convention last week, even though she initially faced a snub. Haley criticized Kamala Harris as a far-left choice but denounced some Republicans’ racist portrayal of Harris as merely a “DEI hire.”

“The fact that you put in one of the most liberal politicians you probably could have put in, it’s going to be an issue. There’s so many issues we can talk about when it comes to Kamala Harris that it doesn’t matter what she looks like,” she commented.

Sean Diddy Combs allegedly paid $1M for Tupac Shakur hit, claims suspect: Report

ByAditi Srivastava
Jul 26, 2024 07:46 AM IST

Ex-gang leader Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis claims Combs offered $1 million for the rapper's killing.

The mysterious deaths of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. have haunted the hip-hop world for decades. Recently, a new wave of intrigue has been stirred with a startling accusation coming to light. A supposed suspect in the matter has alleged that music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs made a huge deal to plan the killing of Tupac. Combs, who is currently embroiled in numerous controversies, has been slapped with yet another explosive claim that threatens to upend the long-held theories surrounding one of the infamous unsolved crimes in music history.

Sean Combs, Tupac Shakur

Diddy accused of paying Million for Tupac hit

On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur, a 25-year-old American rapper known for his revolutionary impact on the music industry, was shot in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was reportedly hit by four bullets from a .40-caliber Glock. Now, according to Fox 5, ex-gang leader Duane “Keefe D” Davis, who faces murder charges in connection with Tupac’s death, allegedly told police that Sean “Diddy” Combs offered $1 million to have the rapper killed.

“[Davis] has asserted publicly that he only told on himself and wasn’t trying to provide evidence against anyone else in his conversations with police,” court documents obtained by the outlet claim.

Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. have been linked for a while because their stories are pretty similar. Biggie was shot a year after Tupac. It was earlier reported that Duane 'Keefe D' Davis, who talked about his part in Tupac's killing in a bunch of interviews, basically admitted to being involved in the crime. A lot of people think that the same person or people could be behind both killings.

“However, this statement belies this claim, as he suggested that Sean Combs paid [drug dealer] Eric Von Martin a million dollars for the killings as well as offered to set up a surreptitious phone call with Terrence Brown, the driver, who, at the time, was still alive,” the statement further read.

Is Sean Combs involved in Tupac Shakur’s death?

The allegation against Sean "Diddy" Combs is not entirely new. This theory has circulated for years but is now gaining traction as the Bad Boy record producer finds himself entangled in serious accusations. This involves sex trafficking, sexual harassment, rape, and battery among others.

Court documents have referenced a "deadly rivalry" between Combs' East Coast label, and Suge Knight's West Coast imprint, Death Row Records. These same documents include a transcript of a 2009 interview where Combs reportedly expressed intense animosity towards Knight, who was with Tupac Shakur at the time of the murder.

The former gang member said Diddy claimed, “I would give anything for that dude [sic] head,” referring to Knight.

Elon Musk’s trans daughter ‘disowns’ the tech mogul following the claim she's ‘dead’ to him

Jul 26, 2024 07:16 AM IST

Elon Musk's trans daughter, Vivian, slams his 'deadnaming' claims and 'woke-mind virus' rhetoric.

Elon Musk’s transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, has slammed her father’s claim that Wilson was “killed by the woke-mind virus.”

The 20-year-old continued her public denouncement on Thursday by telling her 13,000 followers that she had “disowned” Musk.

“I disowned Musk, not the other way around,” she asserted. To emphasize her point, Wilson shared a screenshot of one of Musk's old tweets in which he claimed she was “born gay and slightly autistic.” She condemned these remarks as “entirely fake,” stating, “Like, literally none of this ever happened. Ever. I don’t even know where he got this from. My best guess is he went to the Milo Yiannopoulis school of gay stereotypes, just picked some at random and said, ‘eh- good enough’ in a last-ditch attempt to garner sympathy points when he is so obviously in the wrong even in his own f**king story.”

Musk said ‘woke minded virus’ killed his son

Musk spoke on Monday about his experience with Wilson's transition during an interview with psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson on the Daily Wire. The Tesla boss claimed that he was “tricked” into allowing Wilson, referred to by her deadname, Xavier, to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

“I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys, Xavier,” Musk said.

Musk called allowing children to transition an “incredibly evil” act and suggested that those who promote such surgeries “should go to prison.” He elaborated, “They call it ‘deadnaming’ for a reason. The reason they call it ‘deadnaming’ is because your son is dead. My son Xavier is dead — killed by the woke-mind virus,” directly referring to Wilson’s transition.

Musk has vowed to combat the “woke-mind virus,” stating, “I vowed to destroy the woke-mind virus after that. And we’re making some progress.” After Governor Gavin Newsom signed the new Assembly Bill 1955, which will allow school forms not to notify the parents of their children's gender, he announced plans to move the SpaceX and X headquarters from California to Texas.

Musk explained his rationale, saying, “I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children.”

Kamala Harris takes aim at Benjamin Netanyahu, says 'it's time for this war to end'

VP Kamala Harris presses Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu for Gaza ceasefire, takes tougher tone than President Biden.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday to help reach a Gaza ceasefire deal that would ease the suffering of Palestinian civilians, striking a tougher tone than President Joe Biden.

"It is time for this war to end," Harris said in a televised statement after she held face-to-face talks with Netanyahu.

Harris, the likely Democratic presidential nominee after Biden dropped out of the election race on Sunday, did not mince words about the humanitarian crisis gripping Gaza after nine months of war between Israel and Hamas militants.

"We cannot allow ourselves to be numb to the suffering and I will not be silent," she said.

Harris presses Netanyahu to ease the war in Gaza

Harris' remarks were sharp and serious in tone and raised the question of whether she would be more aggressive in dealing with Netanyahu if elected president on Nov. 5. But analysts do not expect there would be a major shift in U.S. policy toward Israel, Washington's closest ally in the Middle East.

The conflict began on Oct. 7 when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel from Gaza, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 captives, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel's retaliatory attack in Gaza has killed more than 39,000 people and caused a humanitarian calamity with most of the coastal enclave leveled, people displaced from their homes, famine and a shortage of emergency relief.

Biden met with Netanyahu but did not make substantive remarks. Aides said he pressed for a ceasefire in his first face-to-face talks with the Israeli leader since Biden traveled to Tel Aviv in the days after Oct. 7.

Netanyahu will meet Harris' Republican rival, Donald Trump, on Friday at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

A ceasefire has been the subject of negotiations for months. U.S. officials believe the parties are closer than ever before to an agreement for a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release by Hamas of women, sick, elderly and wounded hostages.

"There has been hopeful movement in the talks to secure an agreement on this deal, and as I just told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it is time to get this deal done," Harris said.

ALSO READ| Harris 'will not be silent' on Gaza after tough talks with Netanyahu

Although as vice president she has mostly echoed Biden in firmly backing Israel's right to defend itself, she made clear on Thursday that she was losing patience with Israel's military approach.

"Israel has a right to defend itself. And how it does so matters," Harris said.

Harris calls for end to Gaza war, says 'let's get the deal done' on ceasefire

In March, she bluntly stated that Israel was not doing enough to ease a "humanitarian catastrophe" during its ground offensive in the Palestinian enclave. Later, she did not rule out "consequences" for Israel if it launched a full-scale invasion of refugee-packed Rafah in southern Gaza.

The Gaza conflict has splintered the Democratic Party, and sparked months of protests at Biden events. A drop in support among Arab Americans could hurt Democratic chances in Michigan, one of a handful of states likely to decide the Nov. 5 election.

In a nod to those concerns, Harris urged Americans to help "encourage efforts to understand the complexity, the nuance and the history of the region."

"To everyone who has been calling for a ceasefire and to everyone who yearns for peace, I see you and I hear you," she said. "Let's get the deal done so we can get a ceasefire to end the war."

In an Oval Office address on Wednesday, Biden cited a desire for unity in the Democratic Party as it seeks to defeat Trump as a main reason he decided not to seek reelection but to instead support Harris for the 2024 race.

Harris maintains closer ties to Democratic progressives, some of whom have urged Biden to attach conditions to U.S. weapons shipments to Israel out of concern for high Palestinian civilian casualties in Gaza. The U.S. is a major arms supplier to Israel and has protected the country from critical United Nations votes.

Biden and Netanyahu met together with the families of Americans held by Hamas, who expressed hope for a ceasefire including a release of hostages. "We came today with a sense of urgency," said Jonathan Dekel-Chen, whose son is a captive.

Senator Rubio introduces US-India Defense Cooperation Act

Senator Rubio introduces US-India Defense Cooperation Act

Washington, US Senator Marco Rubio on Thursday introduced a bill in the Congress which proposes to treat India on par with its allies like as Japan, Israel, Korea and NATO allies regarding technology transfers, support India in its response to growing threats to its territorial integrity and bar Pakistan from receiving security assistance if it is found to have sponsored terrorism against India.

Senator Rubio introduces US-India Defense Cooperation Act

“Communist China continues to aggressively expand its domain in the Indo-Pacific region, all while it seeks to impede the sovereignty and autonomy of our regional partners. It’s crucial for the U.S. to continue its support in countering these malicious tactics. India, along with other nations in the region, is not alone,” Rubio said after he introduced the U.S.-India Defense Cooperation Act in the Senate.

Looking to become a technology leader? Embark on this journey with MIT’s Technology Leadership and Innovation Program Download FREE brochure now!

Given the short timeline of a bitterly divided Congress in an election year, the bill is unlikely to make much headway, but might be reintroduced in the next Congress given that there is a bipartisan level of support on India-US relationship. The bill notes that the US-India partnership is vital to countering influences from Communist China. In order to strengthen this partnership, it is essential to enhance our strategic diplomatic, economic, and military relationship with New Delhi, it asserts.

Among other things, the bill would set a Statement of Policy that the US will support India in its response to growing threats to its territorial integrity, provide necessary security assistance to India to deter adversaries, and cooperate with India with respect to defense, civil space, technology, medicine and economic investments.

When passed into law, it would provide a limited exemption for India from CAATSA sanctions for purchases of Russian equipment that are currently used by the Indian military and set a sense of Congress that expeditious consideration of certifications of letters of offer to sell defense articles, defense services, design and construction services, and major defense equipment to India is consistent with US interests and it is in the interest of peace and stability India to have the capabilities needed to deter threats.

It proposes to treat India as if it were of the same status as the US allies such as Japan, Israel, Korea, and NATO allies regarding technology transfers; authorize the Secretary of State to enter into a memorandum of understanding with India to increase military cooperation; expedite excess defense articles to India for two years and grant India the same status as other allies; and expand International Military Education and Training Cooperation with New Delhi.

It requires a report to Congress on Pakistan’s use of offensive force, including through terrorism and proxy groups, against India; and bar Pakistan from receiving security assistance if it is found to have sponsored terrorism against India.

This is for the first time such an India-centric bill has been introduced in the US Congress that proposes to put India at the same level of that of its treaty ally, exempt it from CAATSA sanctions, and imposes sanctions on Pakistan for promoting terrorism in India.

Stepdaughter Ella Emhoff defends Kamala Harris against JD Vance's comments. Meet the youngest kid of Douglas Emhoff shaking up the fashion scene.

Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, has recently attracted attention by defending her mother from JD Vance's disparaging “childless cat lady” comment, which resurfaced from a 2021 interview. Following President Joe Biden's endorsement of Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, many celebrities have rallied in her support. Adding her voice to the chorus is Ella Emhoff, who has not only stood by her stepmother but is also capturing the public’s interest as a rising fashion star.

Ella Emhoff slams Trump’s vp pick JD Vance

The political tide has turned after Biden chose not to run for a second term. Harris has emerged as one of the strongest presidential nominees to fight against Trump, and her chances of winning this election are slightly better than the president's. However, this has also invited a wave of scrutiny, from her dating history to Vance’s “childless cat lady” comment. Now, Harris’ stepdaughter has spoken up in her defence.

Who is Ella Emhoff?

Ella Emhoff is the child of Douglas Emhoff, who married Vice President Kamala Harris on August 22, 2014, in Santa Barbara, California. Prior to this, Emhoff was married to Kerstin Emhoff (née Mackin) for 16 years, and they had two children together, Cole and Ella. Both the siblings were named after renowned jazz artists Ella Fitzgerald and Cole Porter.

Controversy

Ella Emhoff faced backlash after posting a link to a fundraiser for UNRWA on Instagram. This organization, which aids Palestinian refugees and is a major employer in Gaza, was accused by Israel of hiring people linked to the October 7 Hamas attacks. Because of this, the US and other countries pulled their money. UN Watch called out Emhoff for supporting the charity event, but she eventually took down the link from her profile.

Ella’s relationship with Harris

Ella (25) and her older brother Cole came up with the nickname “Momala” for their stepmother when Kamala Harris married Douglas. At the time she was serving as California's Attorney General. After capturing attention with her striking fashion choices at her stepmother’s inauguration in January, Ella Emhoff soon joined IMG Models. In a CNN interview, Kerstin Emhoff, Douglas Emhoff’s ex-wife from 1992 to 2008, lauded the U.S. Vice President as “caring” and “supportive.”

Ella Emhoff the breakout fashion star

Ella, a Parsons fashion student, became an overnight sensation after her daring outfit choices at a major event. Her collaboration with Batsheva Hay and her stunning Miu Miu coat made headlines worldwide. This young talent quickly transitioned from the classroom to the catwalk, debuting at Paris Fashion Week for Balenciaga and landing a coveted magazine cover.

Her star-studded brand collaborations include Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Mulberry, Lacoste, Stella McCartney etc.

Donald Trump wishes America to ‘wipe Iran off the face of the earth’ if…

Jul 26, 2024 06:31 AM IST

Donald Trump hopes the US will “obliterate” Iran if US leaders are threatened after intelligence reveals an Iranian plot to kill him.

Former US President Donald Trump hopes “America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the earth” if the US adversary succeeds in “assassinating” him.

The former POTUS did not mince words in his post. “If they do ‘assassinate President Trump,’ which is always a possibility, I hope that America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the Earth,” he wrote.

“If that does not happen, American Leaders will be considered ‘gutless’ cowards!”

This call for vengeance follows a recent attempt on Trump’s life. Less than two weeks ago, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a would-be assassin’s bullet grazed Trump’s ear. The incident took the life of 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a heroic firefighter, and left 2 others injured.

US officials later disclosed intelligence that indicated an Iranian plot to kill Trump just weeks prior to the July 13 shooting. This threat was communicated to the lead Secret Service agent assigned to Trump’s protection detail and to his campaign team.

The White House National Security Council has been monitoring Iranian threats against Trump administration officials for several years following the US killing of Qassem Soleimani, the leader of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, who was targeted on Trump’s orders in 2020.

Trump’s hardline stance is not new

Back in 2017, Trump also made a similar comment about North Korea when he said Kim Jong Un's country would face “fire and fury” if it continued its belligerent behaviour against the US. “He [Kim Jong-un] has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said, they will be met with the fire and fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before,” Trump said.

In 2019, he warned that if Iran were to develop a nuclear weapon, it would face unprecedented obliteration. During an interview on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ Trump stated, “I’m not looking for war, and if there is, it’ll be obliteration like you’ve never seen before.”

“But I’m not looking to do that. But you can’t have a nuclear weapon. You want to talk? Good. Otherwise you can have a bad economy for the next three years.”

'I don't think there's anybody in the world better suited to be able to see this through than myself.' Harry shares why bringing Meghan to UK is dangerous.

Prince Harry has offered new insights into the reasons behind his family's decision to relocate to the United States. In the recent ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial, the Duke of Sussex has expressed major concerns about the safety and well-being of his wife, Meghan Markle, if they were to return to the United Kingdom. He attributes these concerns primarily to the intense media scrutiny and invasive press coverage the couple has faced which will continue to happen if the security decision is not overturned.

Prince Harry won’t bring Meghan Markle back to the UK

People are wondering if the Sussexes might finally settle down in London to avoid all the hotel hopping they have to do when they're in the UK. But Prince Harry has made it clear he won't be bringing his wife and kids back to his country. In a recent update, Harry made it clear, "That's not going to work if we can't keep them safe while they're here." The Duke, whose security was scaled back following his and Meghan Markle's departure from royal duties, is embroiled in a legal battle to reinstate protection for his family.

‘There is a lot of attention on Meghan’

"There is more than enough attention on me and my wife anyway," the Duke said when asked if their high-profile lawsuits against the press could be drawing more attention to him. The youngest son of the late Princess Diana, also dismissed concerns that his legal actions against media outlets could further endanger himself and his family.

"They pushed me too far," Harry continued. “It got to a point where you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. But I don't think there's anybody in the world better suited and placed to be able to see this through than myself.”

Harry finds it dangerous to bring the family back to the UK

In their bombshell Netflix documentary, Harry and Meghan presented multiple instances of being attacked by random people and the press after they stepped back as senior royals. He now believes, “It's still dangerous, and all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read.”

Talking about how he thinks the tabloid's harsh reporting on the Duchess of Sussex is causing trouble, the Duke went on, “Whether it's a knife or acid, whatever it is, and these are things that are of genuine concern for me. It's one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country."

Why Harry and Meghan left the UK?

One of the main reasons the Sussexes chose to take a break from their royal duties and move to the US was because they thought the danger level was getting worse. Prince Harry has said before that he felt like he had to leave the UK because he was worried about his family's safety. The couple's permission to keep their security clearances was taken away by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC), even though Harry promised to pay for their own security.

The Duke is now appealing the decision in the UK court "The Duke is not asking for preferential treatment, but for a fair and lawful application of RAVEC’s own rules, ensuring that he receives the same consideration as others in accordance with RAVEC’s own written policy," a legal spokesperson from Harry’s team said.

Chinese and Russian bombers patrolling off Alaska raise concerns about growing military cooperation

Chinese and Russian bombers patrolling off Alaska raise concerns about growing military cooperation

WASHINGTON — Russian and Chinese bombers flew together for the first time in international airspace off the coast of Alaska, in a new show of expanding military cooperation that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday raises concerns.

Chinese and Russian bombers patrolling off Alaska raise concerns about growing military cooperation

The flights Wednesday were not seen as a threat, and the bombers were tracked and intercepted by U.S. and Canadian fighter jets. But it was the first time that Chinese bomber aircraft have flown within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone. And it was the first time Chinese and Russian aircraft have taken off from the same base in northeast Russia.

“This is a relationship that we have been concerned about throughout — mostly because we’re concerned about China providing support to Russia’s illegal and unnecessary war in Ukraine," Austin told reporters.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, detected, tracked and intercepted the two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 long-range bombers and the two Chinese H-6 bombers. The aircraft, said Austin, didn't enter U.S. airspace and only got within about 200 miles of the coast.

They were, however, within the ADIZ, which begins where sovereign airspace ends, and aircraft must be easily identifiable and file flight plans for authorization in order to meet national security requirements.

China and Russia both acknowledged what they called a joint patrol over the Bering Sea, which divides Russia and Alaska.

Their growing military relationship has triggered concerns both among NATO allies and with nations in the Asia-Pacific. NATO allies have called China a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war against Ukraine through its “no-limits partnership” with Russia and its large-scale support for Russia’s defense industrial base.

The allies issues a sternly worded statement, approved by the 32 members at their summit in Washington earlier this month.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the patrol also flew over the Chukchi Sea, which is on the north side of the Bering Strait, and that the exercises lasted more than five hours.

The joint patrol tested and improved coordination between the two air forces, said Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for China’s Defense Ministry. He said it was the eighth joint strategic air patrol since 2019. He declined to comment when asked if it was the first such patrol over the Bering Sea.

While Russia’s military has long been active in the north Pacific, China has emerged as a new actor in recent years as its growing navy and air force expand their presence farther from the country’s shores.

Shen Yi, a professor of international politics at Fudan University, wrote in his column that the Chinese flights were to “tell certain countries our strategic deterrence strength” and had symbolic significance in the U.S.-China rivalry.

“China’s boosting its capabilities to carry out effective strategic gaming with the United States and to maintain strategic stability,” Shen wrote. “As this system continuously improves, it can effectively deter the U.S.”

A photo released by the Russian Defense Ministry showed a Russian Su-30 fighter jet escorting a Chinese bomber. Another photo posted online by the military channel of China's state broadcaster CCTV showed Russian and Chinese long-winged bombers flying in parallel formation against mostly blue skies.

The Japanese military has grown increasingly concerned about joint China-Russia drills and the potential threat they pose to the security of Japan and the region.

A fleet of Russian and Chinese warplanes including Tu-95s and H-6s was seen flying together last December over the waters between Japan and Korea, Japan's Defense Ministry said. At the time, China's Defense Ministry called it the seventh joint strategic air patrol with Russia.

Chinese naval ships have showed up in international waters near Alaska, most recently in mid-July when the Coast Guard spotted four ships in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends 200 nautical miles from the shore.

Zhang described the naval activity as routine combat readiness training and said that China would continue to conduct far-seas training to improve the capabilities of its troops.
