Prisma suspends Upstate elective surgeries with fears of a football season COVID surge

COVID hospitalizations at Prisma hospitals

The vast majority of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Prisma Health system are unvaccinated patients according to a September 7, 2021 census.

GREENVILLE — Prisma Health, the state’s largest hospital system, has suspended elective in-patient surgeries in the Upstate as COVID-19 patients overwhelm its hospitals amid growing fears the recent holiday and packed football stadiums will cause a further surge.

The number of COVID-19 patients taking up space is rising “at an alarming rate” even with wide availability of vaccines, Dr. Wendell James, chief clinical officer for Prisma Health in the Upstate, said in a release Sept. 8.
