I am nearly 40 years old, and I only found out recently that "jap" is a derogatory word in america? This was surprising to me as I have grown up around racists my whole life and never once has that term been used. I can think of many many others that are extremely inflammatory but that term has always been a neutral term to me. I used it in shorthand to describe a japanese product but non-japanese american's jumped down my throat for it.

If an american used this term in good faith, as a short-hand abbreviation similar to JPN, would it offend you guys ? I would ask kindly that only people of japanese heritage respond as I am interested in their feelings on the subject.

Reading up on the subject, this term was not derogatory until WWII. Before then, the term was neutral and never used in a negative fashion. How long does it take for a society to stop using a term in a way before the term goes back to being used normally? Is there any evidence this term is used in a negative way in the last few decades? I've seen no evidence of it in my entire life, but I would like to hear all of your input!

In my opinion the sense of "Jap" could vary depending on the intent. However, in my experience (and usage), 99% of the time this is used in the same sense as a "Kiwi, Limey, Ozzy" in that it's shorthand that on its face seems slightly derogatory (because it's so casual) but in fact is a term of affection.

English (and most other languages) is full of this kind of banter but to my knowledge Japanese, at least among adults, is not. So it's easy for a Japanese person who's not really familiar with with this mode of speech to misinterpret. So be careful how and when you use it when Japanese are around.

I grew up in the early 70s and at that time, it was considered derogatory. I still consider it so.

Yes, in the 70's and 80's the term was still used in a derogatory fashion. That is because the generations that made it derogatory were the people who lived in and fought through WWII were still alive and active in society. Their cultural beliefs were still being perpetuated. Did you know that segregation existed in public schools up until the 90's in some parts of the states? It is undoubtably true that terms hijacked for negative usage were still being used then as our culture still had not come to a tipping point about racism. That clearly happened in the 90's as our culture started to grow on the concept of diversity, and really bloomed in the 2000's.

But those people from that WWII generation are mostly dead.

I understand the term meant something to a generation of people who are mostly dead....but have you heard that term used as slandering by any of the last 4 decades of generations? Honest question.

Lol...I know what the Hardy Boys are. You made a South Park reference by saying “raging clue”. The Hardly Boys say that, not the Hardy Boys. You’re mixing the two up.

Hah, now I feel like the idiot. I never realized it was "hardly" vs "hardy". I mean, I guess they had to change it for copyright reasons? I would have thought satire was protected, but maybe not?

Ah good one! Had to look it up...

a Thai dish composed of fried rice noodles with coconut milk. it is so foul that it is used to describe any disgusting thing, and is a less offensive substitute for words such as shit, bonch, mung, or jizz. unless of course you are talking to a thai person.

No problem.

Thank South Park.

he's 100% right

With as many shades that this context has I'm doubtful that anyone could be one hundred percent right.

I would say that he's probably correct on his statement that people are dumb... But I feel it's a lot more complicated than that.

Try not to think in Black and Whites it's not helpful to complex discussion.

Isn't it good that they moved to green? Less confusion between BCH and BTC IMO

Hey kvothe,

When's you story gonna be finished? I'm so tired of waiting.....

If your actions are right, why do you need to wear masks?

Because some gay folks don't want to come out of the closet or fear real life threats for their homosexuality.

That wasn't really too hard to game theory now was it?

It's a pride rally. They can wear pink masks all they like. Gay protestors are not a common source of violence so please stop insinuating that just because they are wearing masks they are up to no good.

I want a print, yes

Screw the print I want an original painting take my money!

SFOX, an institutional crypto prime dealer, found that there was “a near perfect negative correlation” between the S&P 500 and bitcoin in May after China announced plans to raise tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods.

“This is the core argument for why institutional investors should have exposure to the cryptocurrency,” Mr. Pompliano said.

I wonder if this will become self fulfilled prophecy? If enough people believe this then it will probably accelerate this effect.

Long live BTC.

WSJ - I'm not sure what those ugly-ass cheap pins are but we need to get rid of them and use casascius coins instead k thx

The top reply on the tweet is a fake account with a scam.

Can't believe how dumb people are. Why is the old saying "if it's too good to be true it's probably not" not applied more often?

Did you try to 'win" BTC by giving it away? That's a scam.

I keep seeing people say this but he doesn't appear to be that big?

He seems to be of average stature. My guess is that he just has bad style. Like someone that had to work three times as hard as everyone else because their body just doesn't move as nimbly.

Dude...can we please bring back casascius coins on the front of all news articles?

They look so fucking cool. I miss the good old days where every Bitcoin article had casascius coins as the main picture.

Consider it done.

The Aliens flee as quickly as they came.

They didn't "lose 9 trillion dollars". The economy essentially dropped it's own market cap by about 10.2 trillion dollars. https://www.businessinsider.com/2009/2/america-lost-102-trillion-of-wealth-in-2008

How sure are you that this is the information that he was referencing?

I do not know this gentleman or his knowledge but it seems like a pretty big mix-up to confuse a market cap loss vs overprinting/loaning and then being unable to figure it out via an audit.

I would like to see more information and would like to see the original Bloomberg article he is referencing. You posted a link to business insider.

I think that the situation is a good example of the tragedy of Commons. Walmart is in a position where it could raise the wages of its employees but also understands that by doing so puts it at a serious disadvantage comparably to its competitors who might be unwilling to raise wages due to the inevitable price hikes it will probably enact but competitors will not.

Sure they could do it without any formal action from Congress but there would be a lot of risk. They know this so they want Congress to act to protect them. They understand that prices will be raised across the board so it would be an equal playing ground.

If it were me I would look at the transaction and analyze what the sat/byte fee was and then I would compare it to what is currently clearing to see whether or not an appropriate fee was applied.

That would tell me at least whether or not it's a bee related issue.

also if you are going to do a face-to-face transaction you must put a fee that will clear in the time that you wait. Never walk away from a face-to-face transaction without one confirmation.

Not sure why the hate. I love the mimblewimble story, concept and team. Seems like they're trying to do something good,so not like most shitcoins.

It was also received incredibly favorably here when the concept was first proposed. I think once everyone realized that this concept could not be applied to the Bitcoin blockchain then it got all tribal.

Now it's BTC vs the world. While I do agree BTC is King in 99.9% of the situations, there is room for high-quality experimentation and grin is one of the few doing it right.

I don't know that it will be successful, but seems like some great experimentation.

Can we get a source or some context on this one?

Perfect example of the reason why centralization sucks. companies will attempt to repeat the mistakes of the past by hijacking Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is designed for peer-to-peer technology. Yet companies with an agenda will constantly attempt to monopolize industries using a system whose purpose is to prevent monopolization and centralization.

I cannot wait for bitpay to die.

This looks to be a trial balloon.

Just fucking impeach already, JFC.
